Thulendorf: Church, Windmill and Cycle Path
Accommodation in Thulendorf
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Thulendorf, you can plan around two distinct themes: local history and cycling. The church, the windmill in Neu Thulendorf and the 2025 harvest festival provide cultural and historical highlights; the cycle path, opened in 2026, adds a practical connection.
Church and Architectural History
Thulendorf Church is a listed church building. The flat-roofed structure was probably built of fieldstone in the 13th century. Among the surviving remains of the wall paintings is a depiction of John the Baptist, which is thought to date to the mid-17th century. The furnishings also include a simple altar from 1664. The dates add different nuances: the building and the painting are each assigned a probable date, while the year of the altar is specified precisely. This makes it possible to view the building’s history as a succession of different periods.
The Rostock district’s list of listed monuments, dated 14 May 2024, records the church, cemetery and enclosure together as a single monument. It also lists a war memorial in Thulendorf for 1914/18. This memorial provides a distinct point of interest alongside the church complex.
Windmill in Neu Thulendorf
In Neu Thulendorf, part of Thulendorf, stands a gallery-style Dutch windmill built between 1908 and 1912. Its construction took place considerably later than the church’s presumed period of origin, adding another building from a more recent era to the historical overview.
Cycle Path and Directions
A 1,690-metre-long cycle path connects Thulendorf with the existing cycle path along the B110 from Sanitz to Rostock. The new section is 2.5 metres wide and runs as a separate side facility. It was officially opened to traffic on 18 June 2026.
From Thulendorf, the new cycle path makes it easier to get to the railway station, the municipal administration in Broderstorf or Rostock. The stated length of 1,690 metres refers to the new section; the existing cycle path along the B110 is the route it connects to. If you plan to use the path, check the current condition of the infrastructure before setting off.
2025 Harvest Festival
At the harvest festival on 27 September 2025, the programme began with a traditional service in the well-attended Thulendorf Church. The festivities also included a parade of agricultural vehicles, as well as music and games on the festival grounds. The programme described is for the 2025 event; if a future festival is important to your trip, check the latest event dates.
