Lelkendorf: Estate History, Culture and the Peene
Accommodation in Lelkendorf
Lelkendorf combines a long estate history with a year-round cultural program and themes related to the Peene River. For your planning, you can choose between culture, architectural history, wildlife watching and water touring: these aspects appeal to different interests and can be weighted according to the focus of your trip. The landscapes of Nordwestmecklenburg vary: in the north lies the “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” and in the south, the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the landscape of Nordwestmecklenburg district.
History and Culture
The Lelkendorf estate has been the seat of the von Levetzow family since 1225; this continuity was interrupted from 1945 to 1989. At Kulturgut Lelkendorf, the former KFL hall was converted into a concert hall. Kulturgut offers a year-round cultural program; individual events may change. If a particular concert is the reason for your trip, check the date before making plans.
Kulturgut also includes a guest studio with a holiday apartment for artists at work. The historic hall in Lelkendorf Castle is used for concerts and fireside evenings. Lelkendorf Castle is also one of the castles featured on the regional castle trail. If you would like to include the route, check its course and length before your trip.
Architecture and Building History
The village church in Groß Markow was built in 1840 from red brick in the Neo-Gothic style. Brick describes the building material, while “Neo-Gothic” describes the architectural style—two different features of the same building. The organ was built in 1865 by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer, and the stained-glass windows were made in 1890. The organ therefore dates to 25 years after the church was built, and the windows to 50 years after. These dates distinguish the construction period from later features.
The Peene Lowlands and Water Touring
From Lelkendorf, you can reach the Peene Lowlands via the Peeneweg trail. There are opportunities there to observe cranes, eagles, beavers, otters and other wildlife. Lelkendorf is considered a starting point for water touring on the Peene. The river is navigable from Neukalen to the Baltic Sea. If you are weighing wildlife watching against water touring, these are two distinct options: the lowlands along the Peeneweg trail and the navigable river.
Accommodation in Lelkendorf
Lelkendorf Castle offers two holiday apartments for visitors who would like to experience the castle. These holiday apartments are a different type of accommodation from hotels. If a holiday apartment is an option for you, check current availability before your trip.
The castle grounds also include a sauna and a park with a fire pit, stone oven and old trees. These features describe the grounds; the holiday apartments remain a separate type of accommodation.
