Lohmen: Village Church, Village Museum and Recreational Forest
Accommodation in Lohmen
Lohmen brings together medieval church art and regional history with opportunities to enjoy nature. When looking for a hotel in Lohmen, it may be helpful to consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on culture, events or outdoor activities. Local attractions and offerings provide a range of options, from the village church’s wall paintings to Seeblick Recreational Forest and the lakes, which invite visitors to swim in summer.
Village Church and Museum: Discover Lohmen’s History
Lohmen Village Church is a medieval fieldstone building with two bays and a narrower, single-bay chancel; it dates from the late 13th century. A north sacristy and a narrower tower were added later. The interior also defines the church’s art-historical character: the medieval wall paintings are considered unique in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern both in their imagery and execution, and are of great art-historical significance. The interior, painted throughout, continues to attract visitors today.
The Lohmen Village Museum focuses on a different period. In 2006, the granary in Lohmen became a museum, where the region’s 20th-century history is presented. Together, the church and museum offer two different ways to explore the past: medieval architecture and art on the one hand, and regional history from the previous century on the other.
Recreational Forest, Lakes and Trails
The Children’s Health Forest in Lohmen opened on April 25, 2025. This pilot project promotes health, nature-based education and environmental protection. Another nature-focused attraction is Seeblick Recreational Forest, which is intended for play, learning, exercise and experiencing nature. Around 3.3 hectares of municipal forest are legally designated as recreational forest under forestry law.
Nature-focused recreational activities in Lohmen include hiking and fishing. Swimming is another seasonal option: Lohmen’s lakes invite visitors to take a dip in summer. The Sternberger Seenland Nature Park lists archaeological trails in Lohmen and Kritzow among its attractions. In this way, outdoor recreation and engagement with the past come together among the local attractions, without any one focus having to define the entire stay.
The area’s earlier settlement history can also be explored nearby. The area of today’s municipality of Lohmen was settled at least 5,000 years ago, as indicated by megalithic and burial mounds in the surrounding area. A larger burial ground with at least ten Bronze Age burial mounds is also located near Lohmen.
Events and Practical Information
The village festival in Lohmen is held annually. The Mecklenburger Sheep-Shearing Festival and a traditional European Christmas market are also held here. All three events bring together the village square and the festival barn.
The Lohmen Tourist Information Office is located in the festival barn in the village center and offers visitors tips for their stay in the region. This can help you plan if you would like to combine cultural attractions with outdoor recreation or an event during your trip. There are several options to consider when choosing when to visit: the annual village festival, the traditional Christmas market or, in summer, activities centered on the lakes.
