Altenpleen: Cranes, Nature and a Manor House
Accommodation in Altenpleen
Altenpleen is a suitable destination for anyone interested in crane watching, nature and a listed manor house. The connection with nature is especially tangible in Günz: from KRANORAMA, you have a direct view of the Günzer Seewiesen meadows. They are a European Special Protection Area for birds and part of Germany’s National Natural Heritage; Kranichschutz Deutschland is developing the meadows in a way that is compatible with nature conservation. Rural communities in the municipality of Altenpleen lie on the edge of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park.
Cranes and Nature in GĂĽnz
KRANORAMA is an accessible crane-watching station on GĂĽnzer See. During the crane roosting season, you can sometimes observe up to 4,000 cranes, thousands of geese and ducks, and numerous white-tailed eagles at the same time, from morning until evening. If you are planning your trip around birdwatching, the season is an important factor: these sightings are during the crane roosting season, not throughout the year.
The KRANICHWELTEN visitor centre offers another way to explore nature. Its 20,000 m² outdoor area includes walk-through insect and wetland habitats, as well as places to sit and relax. The NABU KRANICHWELTEN visitor centre is also a starting point for numerous excursions and other events, including the annual “Week of the Crane” in September. Check the specific event dates before your trip if you plan to arrange your stay around them.
The route to KRANORAMA also helps visitors find their way around the site: information boards and seating areas line the route from the car park to the observation station, with places to pause along the way and take in the information.
Plan Your Journey by Bus or Bicycle
Bus route 305 runs from Stralsund and Barth to Günz. From the bus stop, it is about a 500 m walk to KRANICHWELTEN. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the operator’s or local transport authority’s current timetable before setting out.
From Barth, you can cycle to KRANICHWELTEN via the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and Nisdorf and GĂĽnz. The route is about 18 km long and can be cycled all the way; nevertheless, check current route conditions before setting out. The information provided offers different details to help you choose between bus and bicycle: for the bus, it gives the route number and walking distance from the stop; for the cycle route, it gives the route via the named places and the approximate total distance.
Manor House and History
Another local highlight is the listed Altenpleen manor house. It was built in the second half of the 19th century on the site of a former manor estate. This links the construction period of the present building to the site’s earlier use. The manor house complements the nature and crane-related attractions with a glimpse into local and architectural history.
Vorpommern-RĂĽgen in a Broader Context
The wider destination of Vorpommern-Rügen extends beyond Altenpleen. The district includes the island of Rügen and the nearby islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of Vorpommern-Rügen. The district has an estimated 60 museums. In the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, the old town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. These examples give an impression of the district’s thematic and geographical breadth, while the local highlights in Altenpleen are in Günz and at the manor house.
