Bad Sülze: Salt History, Moorland and Spa Park
Accommodation in Bad Sülze
Bad Sülze brings together salt history, moorland and a spa park. There are different ways to plan your visit: the Salt Museum of Mecklenburg and the town church focus on historical heritage, while the spa park and paths through nature offer a more outdoor-oriented stay. Bad Sülze is part of the “Vogelpark-Recknitztal” tourism region.
Salt History and Historic Buildings
The permanent exhibition at the Salt Museum of Mecklenburg traces the history of salt production from its beginnings in 1243 through to the 20th century. The museum is housed in the former administrative building of the Grand Ducal Saltworks, the Old Salt Office. The half-timbered building dates from 1759 and adds a chapter on architectural history to the museum visit.
The Salt Museum’s open-air area includes, among other things, a working boiling house with a stone baking oven. The museum also has a working, probably Germany’s smallest graduation tower. Visitors can inhale the brine mist there; the graduation tower disperses brine for the respiratory tract and lets visitors enjoy the fresh salt air. Visitors can also take a stroll through Timm’s Garden.
Bad Sülze’s town church is the oldest building in the town that can be verified as such; its first sections were built around 1180. Inside are a Gothic baptismal font and the Kersten organ, which dates from the 18th century. Another landmark in the town’s history is the tower Dutch windmill on Krähenberg: it dates from 1758 and was in operation until 1937.
Moorland and Spa Park
The Grenztalmoor between Bad Sülze and Tribsees shapes the town and extends into Bad Sülze. Moor is extracted immediately beside the spa park for therapeutic purposes, processed and used for moor baths. Moorland is thus not only part of the landscape, but is also connected with the local tradition of moor baths.
The 13-hectare spa park has very old trees, ornamental shrubs, extensive rhododendron groves and flower beds. Its idyllic paths offer opportunities for peace and relaxation. The park was restored in 2022. When visiting the spa park, both its landscaped grounds and its paths offer different ways to enjoy it.
Another way to experience the spa park is to ride the “Moorblitz” park railway. It runs on a 675-metre circular route north of the old spa house and west of the Salt Museum. The railway station is opposite the Salt Museum. If you are planning a ride on the park railway, you can check the timetable in advance.
Hiking and Other Trails
The hiking route around Bad Sülze is a circular trail from the spa park via the sports ground and Schulenberger Burg and back to the spa park. In addition, there are many hiking trails in Bad Sülze and the immediate surrounding area that pass through nature and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by canoe. So, besides the named circular route, there are other paths and different ways to get around.
The Grenztalmoor nature reserve and the Recknitz lowlands landscape protection area are located close to Bad Sülze. Both areas offer opportunities for hiking and relaxation. Together with the moorland within the town, they offer a contrast between the landscape right by the spa park and nearby protected areas. When planning your visit, you can choose whether to focus on the moorland or a trail through the surrounding area.
