Dierhagen: Beach, Harbour and History
Accommodation in Dierhagen
The Baltic seaside resort of Dierhagen lies at the entrance to the Fischland-DarĂź-Zingst peninsula and can be reached by car, bicycle, plane or on foot. Its beach, harbours and waterway rest stops, as well as historic sites and seasonal activities, give the destination a variety of facets. If you are considering Dierhagen for a stay, you can decide based on whether the coast, activities on the water, or history and culture are your main priorities.
Beach and access points
Dierhagen’s beach is a white, fine sandy beach around seven kilometres long and up to 30 metres wide. Its length and width give an idea of the extent of the coastline; local signs and access points are also important when choosing a particular stretch of beach. Some sections are designated as nudist areas, while others are dog beaches. These designations may change seasonally, so check the signs on site.
There are beach access points for visitors with mobility impairments. Accessible toilets are available at some beach entrances; the facilities available may vary from one entrance to another. If you rely on a particular access point or toilet, check what is available at the relevant beach entrance. This lets you plan your beach visit around the designated facilities without assuming that the amenities at one section apply to the entire beach.
Harbours and trips on the water
The waterway rest stop in Dierhagen Dorf has 54 berths. Dierhagen Harbour and waterway rest stop has modern sanitary facilities and a boat slipway. The historic salt harbour of Dändorf lies on the west bank of the Saaler Bodden and is now a popular stopping place for waterway travellers. Together, these places show different aspects of spending time on the water: berths, harbour facilities and a rest stop on the Bodden coast.
Passenger ships also depart from Dierhagen Harbour for Bodden tours in the “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” National Park. The Kruse and Voß passenger boat service includes the MS “Ostseebad Wustrow”, the MS “Bültenkieker” and the MS “Boddenkieker”. Routes and operating times are seasonal, so check them before your trip. The harbour and boat tours complement the beach with a different perspective on the surrounding area, though this does not mean that the same options are available at every stretch of beach.
History in Dierhagen Dorf and Dändorf
The church in Dierhagen Dorf houses the model ship “Vergatte von Dierhagen 1799”. The church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to September; check seasonal opening hours before visiting. The model, with its name and date, offers a specific point of interest for a visit, while the Dändorf History House presents changing exhibitions on the history of the Baltic seaside resort of Dierhagen.
The Dändorf History House is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to October. Check seasonal opening times before your visit. Dändorf is also home to the historic Salt Road, preserved as a listed historic monument alongside the old captains’ houses. The exhibition, model ship and road each offer a different focus: a visit might centre on changing historical topics, a single maritime model or the preserved streetscape.
Seasonal activities and getting your bearings
The Sunset Piano Concert takes place in Dierhagen every year in late July or early August, with music performed by Lutz Gerlach and Ulrike Mai. Check the programme for your desired travel dates. From May to October, the “Hike through the Great Moor” tour combines a bike ride with a hike through the Ribnitz Great Moor. It starts at the Haus des Gastes in Dierhagen Strand; check the current dates for this seasonal activity before your trip. The concert and tour therefore differ both in season and in the type of activity.
Dierhagen Spa Park was completed in 1998 and is right next to the Haus des Gastes. Together with the moor activity that starts there, this landmark helps you locate the tour’s starting point; the route leads through the Ribnitz Great Moor. Dierhagen therefore offers specific points to consider when choosing where to stay: an extensive fine sandy beach, designated beach areas, activities on the water, historic sites and individual seasonal events. Which of these matters most to you depends on whether you prioritise the beach, the water, or culture and excursions.
