Eixen: Eixener See, Cycling Tour and Village Church
Accommodation in Eixen
When planning a stay in Eixen, two questions can help: What themes would you like to shape your visit, and would you like the August lake festival to be part of your trip? Eixener See offers opportunities for recreation and nature observation, the cycling tour connects Eixen with a detour there, and the village church offers an art-historical focus. This distinction can help you consider when to travel and then look for a hotel.
At Eixener See: Recreation and Nature
Eixener See is located within the municipality of Eixen. The lakeside area has a beach, a volleyball court, and a bathing and fishing pier. Birdwatching and nature observation are also possible there. This offers two distinct focuses: recreation by the water and nature observation. A 10-metre-high observation tower in the municipality offers an idyllic view over the lake.
Cycling Routes and the Lake Festival
The lakeside area is connected to cycling routes; the “Around Semlow” cycling tour also passes through Eixen and includes a detour to Eixener See. The tour connects Eixen with a detour to the lake, while the cycling-route connection leads directly to the lakeside area. If you are planning to cycle, you can choose between a named circular route and the cycling-route connection at the lake.
The lake festival at Eixener See takes place every year in August and includes the “Eixener See in Flames” fireworks spectacle. Dates and program may vary.
Village Church and Art History
The village church in Eixen is a fieldstone building dating from the mid-13th century. Its architectural features include brick gables and brick window surrounds. Parts of the painted decoration also date from the 13th century and were uncovered again during restoration. The building and its painted decoration thus offer distinct points of interest within the history of medieval churches.
The winged altar represents a later period. Its front depicts figures of saints, the Coronation of the Virgin, and Saint George; its reverse features panel paintings. The altar was probably carved in Lübeck around 1530. The pulpit of St. George’s Church in Eixen was made in 1744 in the workshop of Stralsund woodcarver Michel Müller. From the 13th-century architectural and painted details, through the altar of around 1530, to the pulpit of 1744, the points of reference span several centuries. This makes it possible to understand the church’s art not only through individual motifs, but also through their chronology.
Travel Dates and Focus
There is an important distinction when choosing your travel dates: the lake, cycling tour, and church offer thematic focuses, while the lake festival is tied to its annual August date. If you would like to visit for the fireworks, check the date and program, as both may vary. For a visit focused on nature, cycling, or the church, you can start by considering your main interest.
