Fuhlendorf: Nature on the Bodden and Maritime History
Accommodation in Fuhlendorf
Fuhlendorf lies on the Redensee Bay of the Bodstedter Bodden. The town brings together a nature discovery trail in the forest, natural swimming spots, and maritime history reflected in the JOHANNA and the area’s former boatbuilding tradition. These different highlights offer practical starting points for planning your stay.
The JOHANNA and Fuhlendorf’s Boatbuilding History
The shipwreck JOHANNA lies on the Bodden shore in Fuhlendorf. The steel vessel is a besan scow (sailing scow) with a wooden bottom and was built in 1899 by D. W. Kremer in Elmshorn. It is 19.04 meters long and 4.77 meters wide, with a registered tonnage of 38.00 GRT. This makes a specific historic watercraft the focus, with a clearly identifiable origin and type of construction.
A public path leads through a small marshy woodland on the Bodden coast to the Bodden, offering a close-up view of the JOHANNA. Check the condition of the path locally before your visit. Fuhlendorf’s maritime history also extends beyond the wreck: the Dornquast boatyard operated on Hafenstraße from 1885 until the early 1950s. Between 1871 and 1914, 40 sailing boats were built in Fuhlendorf and 12 in Michaelsdorf. The boatyard’s history and the figures for both towns offer different insights into boatbuilding.
Nature Discovery Trail: Circular Route and Shorter Extensions
The main route of the Fuhlendorf Nature Discovery Trail is an approximately 2.2-kilometer circular walk through Fuhlendorf Forest. Seven stations bring a puzzle story to life along the route: each one features a hidden gemstone and a letter board. The trail is therefore defined not only by its length, but also by the activities associated with its stations.
Extensions include “Puzzle Animals,” at approximately 860 meters, and “Forest Eye,” at approximately 800 meters. The main route is longer than either extension. At one station, the trail introduces wolves, red foxes, wild boar, red deer, roe deer, and Eurasian jays. Visitors can discover animal tracks there and imitate the animals. The circular route and extensions thus differ both in their stated lengths and in the trail’s puzzle and nature themes.
Swimming Spots and Practical Information
Fuhlendorf has natural swimming spots with sunbathing lawns on HafenstraĂźe and at Seegang. Together with the forest trail, they offer two different options for planning your day: a walk through the forest or time at a local swimming spot. The locations mentioned are on different streets in the town.
The Southern Bodden Coast Tourist Information Office in Fuhlendorf sells tickets for town tours, guided excursions, and community events. It also issues tourist fishing licenses and fishing permits for inland and coastal waters. An information point with town maps is located on DorfstraĂźe/Alte DorfstraĂźe.
Maritime Events and Culture
In Bodstedt, within the municipality of Fuhlendorf, the Bodstedt Zeesenboot Regatta traditionally takes place on the first weekend of September. It is the oldest event of its kind. If you’d like to plan your trip around this maritime event, check the exact date for your travel year.
Another cultural point of interest is K-Drei e.V. Fuhlendorf, a nonprofit cultural association founded in 2018 on the southern Bodden coast in the municipality of Fuhlendorf. Its focus on cinema, art, and communication brings together different areas of culture. The association brings together cultural professionals and culture enthusiasts from Fuhlendorf, Bodstedt, the surrounding region, and Berlin. Along with the boatbuilding history and regatta, this cultural focus adds another dimension to the area’s nature and water experiences.
