Groß Mohrdorf combines a brick church with a cycling tour that includes the village as one of its stops. This brings architectural and art history together with a longer cycling route. Other attractions can be found elsewhere in the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf; when planning, it is worth distinguishing these from the destination itself.

Brick Church and Art History

The brick church in Groß Mohrdorf was built in the second half of the 13th century. Its furnishings add works from later centuries to this early construction: the altar and pulpit were made by Stralsund sculptor Johannes Wendt around 1700. The organ was built in 1870 by organ builder Friedrich Albert Mehmel. The church inventory also includes a Baroque baptismal angel, made in 1724 by Stralsund sculptor Elias Keßler.

Three Neo-Gothic mausoleums stand in the church cemetery. The Preetz Chapel is also located there. Inside, there is a large marble angel modeled on ancient art and blue glass windows with floral motifs. The chapel is opened for visits; visiting arrangements may vary. Check the current conditions before your visit. Concerts and church services are also held in the church. If you are planning to attend a concert, check the specific dates, as the program may change.

The “Crane, Art & Coast” Cycling Tour

The 38-kilometer tour passes through Prohn, Klein Damitz, Klausdorf, Barhöft, Hohendorf, Groß Mohrdorf, Bisdorf, Kinnbackenhagen, Nisdorf, Neuen- and Altenpleen, and Sommerfeld before returning to Prohn. The cycling tour is estimated to take about seven hours; time for sightseeing is additional. The route is flat to gently rolling, and the road surfaces vary. You can take both into account when planning your ride, without including sightseeing time in the stated riding time.

Other Places and Nature Watching in the Municipality

Hohendorf Castle is in the village of the same name in the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf, outside the destination of Groß Mohrdorf itself. It was built in 1854 for the von Klot-Trautvetter family, based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, in the Tudor Revival style. The castle stands on a three-hectare parkland estate with old oaks and beeches; the park was designed according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné. Hohendorf therefore offers a separate focus alongside the church in the destination itself.

Crane watching is also tied to specific places and times. A forest and field path leads from Bisdorf to an observation platform. In spring or autumn, cranes can be watched there at sunrise and sunset; conditions vary depending on the migration year. Cranes can be seen twice a year in the immediate surroundings of Hohendorf Castle. At times, up to 70,000 birds can be seen in the shallow lagoons of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. In the wider region around the Vorpommersche Bodden coast, the so-called crane dances can be observed on broad pastures and meadows from February to March.

The municipality’s seasonal landscape also includes the wide fields that turn yellow when the rapeseed blooms. A developed cycling path runs along the coast through the municipality, passing observation platforms and a birdwatching hut. Together with the “Crane, Art & Coast” tour, these offer different points of reference for planning: the route through Groß Mohrdorf, other paths in the municipality, and nature watching at specific times of year.
