Pruchten – Bodden Lagoons, Water Sports and Art
Accommodation in Pruchten
Pruchten combines its location on several Bodden lagoons with water sports and a rich history of art and culture. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different priorities: time at the natural swimming area, water sports courses and equipment, or a look inside studios and local traces of the Darß Railway. The landscape, water activities and cultural sites thus showcase different sides of the municipality.
Between the Bodden Lagoons and Zingst
Much of the municipality of Pruchten lies on a peninsula that stretches north towards the Zingst peninsula. To the east are the Barther Strom and Barther Bodden; to the west is the Bodstedter Bodden. Part of the municipality lies within Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Its location can therefore be understood in terms of its direction towards Zingst, the Bodden lagoons and the fact that part of the area is within the national park.
Water Activities and Bodden Lagoon Cruises
There is a natural swimming area at the campsite in Pruchten, which also gives surfers and kitesurfers access to the water. A local water sports centre offers equipment and courses for beginners and advanced participants. The small harbour has boat hire and a waterway travellers’ rest area. Passenger boats pass Pruchten and Bresewitz and take guests on cruises around the Bodden lagoons through Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. The options vary according to the kind of water experience you are looking for: a natural swimming area, a course, boat hire or a cruise as a passenger. Check current dates for specific courses and boat trips.
Art Studios and Sculptures
Pruchten has art studios for painting, sculpture, crafts and ceramics, and their studios are open to visitors. The Holzhausatelier and Sculpture Garden Pruchten hosts a year-round studio and works exhibition. Steel and wooden sculptures by Max Barske can also be found in the Holzhausatelier and its surroundings. Open studios covering several disciplines sit alongside the exhibition and the works in the surrounding area. If you would like to visit the exhibition, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Traces of the Darß Railway
The old track network and station buildings of the Darß Railway are still preserved in Pruchten and Bresewitz; the buildings are now used for other purposes. Unlike the art studios, the focus here is on the railway’s physical traces and the stations’ changed use. The municipality thus brings together different cultural points of interest: crafts and exhibitions on the one hand, railway history and repurposed station buildings on the other.
Viewpoint and Regional Context
At the Kloer Bridge, there is a Bodden lagoon viewpoint on the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route between Pruchten and Bresewitz. It adds a specific landscape viewpoint along the cycle route to the water activities on offer. For orientation, a view from the cycle route is distinct from a Bodden lagoon cruise on the water.
For a broader regional perspective, it is also worth looking at the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Rügen. There are an estimated 60 museums in Vorpommern-Rügen district. The art collection of the district is preserved, cared for and managed at the Gallery in the Monastery in Ribnitz-Damgarten. It comprises around 500 works of painting, prints, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design, dating from the late 19th century to the present day.
