Ribnitz-Damgarten offers nature, architectural history and hands-on experiences. In the district of Neuheide, the Ribnitz Great Moor is a defining feature of the municipal forest; in Klockenhagen, the focus is on northern German architecture and a seasonal baking activity. The Rostock Gate and Ribnitz Monastery offer insights into the town’s history and exhibitions. This gives you a range of options for planning your trip according to your interests: would you like to learn about moorland ecology, see historic buildings or try something yourself? JOHO Park offers a different kind of attraction with its aquapark. If you are looking for a hotel in Ribnitz-Damgarten, your travel interests can guide your planning.

Moorland and nature trail

The coastal Ribnitz Great Moor is located in the district of Neuheide and is part of the Ribnitz-Damgarten municipal forest. It covers 274 hectares and is one of the largest raised bogs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the Forest and Moor Information Centre, the nature trail offers insights into the ecology, flora and fauna of the different ecological zones of Ribnitz’s municipal forest along an easy-to-follow route. This connects the moorland landscape with a trail that introduces visitors to the natural features of the municipal forest. If you are more interested in nature than in architecture or museums during your stay, the moor and the trail offer two specific points of interest.

Architecture in Klockenhagen and around town

The Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum showcases 20 examples of northern German architecture in a unique ensemble. The number of examples gives an idea of the breadth of the museum’s architectural focus. The Hanstorf bakehouse houses the museum bakery. As part of the seasonal hands-on activity “Bake bread in a wood-fired oven,” museum visitors can bake a loaf of bread themselves for an additional fee. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check whether it is available during your visit; its seasonal availability and additional fee are relevant to your planning. Klockenhagen thus combines architecture with a hands-on activity.

The Rostock Gate is the only surviving Gothic town gate in Ribnitz-Damgarten. It was built in the 15th century and still marks the entrance to the town centre today. This gives the gate a distinctive place in the town’s history: it combines Gothic architecture with its enduring role at the entrance to the town centre. Ribnitz Monastery has a permanent exhibition featuring unique artefacts such as the mysterious “nun’s dust.” While the gate puts a surviving building in the spotlight, the monastery focuses on special exhibits. As the display may change, check the current exhibition details before your visit.

Amber and aquapark

At the Experience Workshop of the German Amber Museum, visitors of all ages can polish amber and search for amber in the sand. The focus here is on hands-on activities with amber. The workshop activities available may vary; check what is on offer during your stay before you travel. JOHO Park at Bernsteinsee in Ribnitz-Damgarten offers a different kind of attraction: its aquapark features giant slides, climbing elements and jumping platforms. Ribnitz-Damgarten thus offers a variety of experiences, from hands-on work with amber to the aquapark features listed above.
