Tribsees: St. Thomas Church, Potato Museum and Canoeing
Accommodation in Tribsees
When staying in Tribsees, you can choose from a range of themes for your visit: St. Thomas Church combines distinctive carved work with historic furnishings, the Western Pomeranian Potato Museum offers a theme all its own, and the Tribsees waterway rest stop offers canoe rentals. This lets you explore sacred art, a museum devoted to a distinctive subject, and activities on the water as different focal points of your trip.
St. Thomas Church: distinctive furnishings and history
St. Thomas Church is known for a unique mill altarpiece: no other church has a carved altarpiece featuring the mill motif. The church was first mentioned in a historical document in 1245. This date refers to its first documented mention, not necessarily to the year it was built.
Individual furnishings also have their own dates and provenance. A bell cast in 1485 from the former St. Jürgen Chapel is housed in St. Thomas Church. Seven carved reliefs date from 1547 and belonged to a pulpit from St. Jakobi in Lübeck. These dates therefore place individual objects in context; they should not be read as the church’s construction dates.
The organ, built by Karl August Buchholz of Berlin, was first played at Christmas in 1831. An epitaph adds another distinctive feature: it depicts the Last Judgment, is surrounded by 25 coats of arms, and is dedicated to Christian von Küssow, who died in 1577. Thus, the church’s furnishings reflect not only the mill motif but also musical history and a specific dedication.
St. Thomas Church is also located on the Via Baltica, the Baltic Sea branch of the Way of St. James. If you would like to include a connection to a pilgrimage route in your trip, this location adds another dimension to the church’s historical themes.
A museum devoted to a distinctive subject in Tribsees
The Western Pomeranian Potato Museum in Tribsees is considered the only potato museum in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This makes it a clear contrast to the sacred art of St. Thomas Church: the museum focuses on the potato, while the church centers on its religious furnishings and history. If you plan your time in Tribsees around your interests, you can choose these two destinations for their distinct themes.
Canoe rental and overnight stays at the waterway rest stop
The Tribsees waterway rest stop offers canoe rentals. Overnight stays are possible there only in your own tent. The rest stop has showers, toilets and Wi-Fi. If you are considering staying overnight there, factor the tent requirement into your plans. Operator information can change, so check the details about canoe rentals, overnight stays and facilities again before your trip.
