Lübow brings together several themes for planning a trip: a village church with Late Romanesque architecture, artists who live and work in the municipality, and cycling destinations such as Wismar and Lake Schwerin. Local dining and guesthouse rooms are also part of what the area offers. Availability of guesthouse rooms and dining options may change; check before your trip.

Village Church with Medieval Traces

Lübow was first mentioned in 1192 under the name “de Lubowe” and is considered a place of Slavic origin. This first mention predates the construction of the village church, which was built around 1220. The Late Romanesque brick building is considered the second-oldest church in Mecklenburg.

Specific features include richly moulded round-arched portals. The church is also considered a model for Schwerin Cathedral. Sections of medieval wall paintings have been uncovered in the choir; the church also houses a Winzer organ dating from 1850. The construction period, portal design, wall paintings and organ offer insights into different aspects of the building’s history and furnishings.

The northern sacristy is used as a winter church. If you would like to include this use in your visit, check the current arrangements in advance; visitor arrangements may change.

Local Culture and Cycling Destinations

Artists who live and work in Lübow invite visitors to view their exhibitions. Check what options are currently available before visiting, as participation and access may change. The “Zur Kegelbahn” restaurant has an adjoining hall and a modern bowling alley for cultural and sporting activities. Before your trip, check whether the venue is currently operating.

A comprehensive network of cycling routes makes it possible to take a cycling trip from Lübow to Wismar. The same network also opens up the opportunity for an outing to Lake Schwerin. If you are planning a cycling tour, check the current route before setting off, as infrastructure may change.

Northwest Mecklenburg in a Broader Context

In the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the landscape is shaped by terminal moraines, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping stretches of coast, meltwater channels and outwash plains. In the north, Northwest Mecklenburg includes the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.”

Gadebusch Castle in Gadebusch, in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg, is also one of the region’s cultural attractions. The Renaissance castle dates from 1573 and is considered a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Renaissance. Its features include reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.

The “Radegast Valley” protected landscape area is also part of the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg. It covers around 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Lake Neddersee near Gadebusch. The area includes the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, woodlands and swamp forests.
