Bibow can be explored through three specific aspects: its landscape of meadows, forests and small streams; the architectural history of its church; and the cultural focus of Neuhoff Castle. Lakes and information about bus and rail connections complete the picture. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether landscape, historic buildings, culture or travel connections are most important to you.

Landscape, lakes and cycle paths

Meadows and forests shape the landscape of the municipality of Bibow; small streams flow through the meadows. The municipality includes Bibow Lake and Neuhoff Lake. Bibow Lake is described as 9 metres deep, and Neuhoff Lake as 4.5 metres. Together, these details give a concrete impression of the landscape: alongside the meadows and forests are two lakes with different recorded depths.

The municipal cycle route plan relating to Bibow takes into account the Hamburg–Rügen Long-Distance Cycle Route and the Baltic Coast Cycle Route. Route alignments and signage may change; check both before a cycling trip if you would like to include these routes in your plans.

Church and architectural history

Bibow Church is considered the oldest building in the municipality and is worth a stop for a visit. The timber in the chancel roof structure was dendrochronologically dated to the winter of 1296/97; the completion of the shell structure is inferred to have taken place in 1297. The two dates refer to different things: the dating applies to the timber used, while 1297 is the inferred completion date of the shell structure.

The Bibow Church Building Association began restoration work in 1999. As restoration progressed, the church’s religious and cultural use also intensified. The building’s history and its restoration therefore offer two distinct points of reference when looking at the building: its medieval origins and the later work begun to preserve it.

Neuhoff Castle and culture

Neuhoff Castle in Neuhof, Bibow, is open for events and exhibitions. Its cultural focus encompasses visual arts, music, performing arts, literature and crafts, as well as history and local heritage. The castle thus offers a different cultural perspective from the church: here, a broad range of cultural fields takes centre stage, while the church is particularly suited to exploring architectural and restoration history.

Getting here by bus and train

The municipality’s 2023 mobility plan lists stops on NAHBUS route 202 in all five districts. Check the current service frequency before travelling so you can plan your journeys using the services in operation.

The nearest regional railway stations are in Ventschow and Blankenberg. From Dämelow, it is approximately 1.5 kilometres on foot to Ventschow station; from Nisbill, it is about 7.5 kilometres to Blankenberg station. These are approximate walking distances. Check both the routes and train services before departure.

Northwest Mecklenburg on a larger scale

The wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg opens up a broader landscape perspective. In the north, Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The county’s landscape is also shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and shallow coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. The specific landscape features of Bibow and the broader classification of the county therefore represent two different scales.
