Glasin: Hills, Moorlands and Village Church
Accommodation in Glasin
If you are looking for a hotel in Glasin, you can choose your destination based on landscape and cultural themes. Highlights range from terminal moraine hills and moorland habitats to the Groß Tessin Village Church. You can consider whether nature, exercise or architectural history is particularly important to you during your stay.
Landscape in Glasin
Glasin is characterised by a terminal moraine landscape, where valleys and hills alternate continually. Hills over 90 to 100 metres high lie in the south; the Groß Tessin Basin lowlands are to the east, and a sandy outwash plain to the west. At 104 metres above sea level, Fuchsberg is the highest point. Fuchsberg thus marks a single high point; the continual alternation of valleys and hills is also important to the overall landscape.
Northwest Mecklenburg as the wider landscape setting
At district level, Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills and Wismar Bay” landscape area in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. The district is also characterised by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains.
Nature and outdoor activities
The Tüzen Moor and the Großes Torfmoor peat bog east of Poischendorf are among the valuable habitats for plants and animals. Orchid species such as the lesser butterfly-orchid and the common twayblade grow in the Züsow Forest. The Züsow Forest is considered a special attraction in the area around Glasin and Babst. In Babst, protected biotopes include moors, thickets and swamp forests, small bodies of water, and wet meadows. Nature here ranges from habitats and orchids to protected biotopes.
The varied landscape around Glasin and Babst is well suited to hiking. One specifically named cycling option is Regional Cycle Route 5, “Between Neukloster and Züsow Forest.” It is 40 kilometres long, includes Glasin and Babst, and passes through a large forest. Before setting out, check the current signage and trail conditions on site. The cycle route is described in specific terms, including its length and forest cover; for hiking, the focus is on the suitability of the varied landscape. The bathing area at Groß Tessin Lake is also a recreational amenity in the area.
Groß Tessin Village Church
The Groß Tessin Village Church combines architectural and decorative features from different periods. The seven-bay brick building probably dates from the first half of the 14th century. The west tower is designed as a defensive tower, and an inscription on the roof is dated 1741. Inside, the Baroque pulpit altar from 1750 dominates. The different dates are important to the historical context: the building date is uncertain, while the tower inscription and pulpit altar have fixed dates. A bay is a section between the supporting elements of a building.
