Wedendorfersee: Lake, Hiking Trails and Castle History
Accommodation in Wedendorfersee
Wedendorfersee can be explored through two distinct highlights: Lake Wedendorfer See and its landscape, as well as historic buildings such as Wedendorf Castle and the village church in Kirch Grambow. The trails also lead to different destinations. One hiking trail goes around the lake; another is signposted behind the church and leads to the lake. When planning, you can therefore choose between a hike by the lake, a short detour to the water and cultural-history sites.
Lake, Protected Area and Landscape
Lake Wedendorfer See covers approximately 24 hectares and is part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle including Wedendorfer See” landscape protection area. Its natural shoreline has an almost continuous belt of reeds. Together with extensive rolling pastures and fields, this shapes the landscape around Wedendorfersee. Lake Wedendorfer See is part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle including Wedendorfer See” landscape protection area.
If you choose where to go based on the landscape, the shoreline and rolling countryside are two distinct features to keep in mind. The lake provides a clear reference point for planning your route, while the pastures and fields shape the wider landscape.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
A hiking trail funded by LEADER goes around Lake Wedendorfer See. Another option is the signposted hiking trail behind the church in Kirch Grambow, which allows for a short detour to the lake. The two trail descriptions answer different planning questions: one route goes around the lake, while the other offers a short detour to the water. The key consideration when planning is whether the lake itself determines your route or whether you want to include it as a detour on a hike.
Wedendorf Castle and the Village Church
Wedendorf Castle was built in 1697. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Plan to see the exterior rather than visit the interior.
Kirch Grambow is part of the municipality of Wedendorfersee and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Wedendorfer See. The village church houses a Baroque altar with elaborate carvings, which was brought to the church in 1691. The years refer to different events: the altar was brought to the church in 1691, and the castle was built in 1697. To arrange a guided tour of the church, you can contact Pastor Ortlieb at 038872 / 51 013.
The Wider Landscape: Nordwestmecklenburg
In the wider travel destination of Nordwestmecklenburg, the north includes the landscape region “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” while the south belongs to the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The landscape of Nordwestmecklenburg includes terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat stretches of coast, meltwater and drainage channels, and sandur plains. This describes the diversity of the wider travel destination; the local landscape around Lake Wedendorfer See is characterized by its natural reed-covered shore, rolling pastures and fields.
