Blowatz: Cycling Routes, Equestrian Tournaments and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Blowatz
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route reaches Blowatz; the Blowatz Riding and Driving Club has also been holding equestrian tournaments for many years. The following topics range from church and local history to cycling routes and hands-on crafts.
Dreveskirchen Village Church and the Paul Schmidt Organ
The Evangelical Lutheran village church in Dreveskirchen is a listed brick building dating from the second half of the 13th century. Its architecture shows the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The furnishings include Baroque pieces, a Late Gothic triumphal cross group and medieval wall paintings. The church building thus brings together different periods and art forms.
The Paul Schmidt organ was built in 1754 and restored from 1999 to 2001. It is the oldest surviving Paul Schmidt organ in Mecklenburg. You can hear it at concerts during the annual Dreveskirchen Music Summer. In July and August, the church is open daily from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.; visits can also be arranged in advance. Check the opening hours before your arrival.
Cycling Routes with Different Landmarks
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route passes the houses in Wodorf before reaching Blowatz. Along this stretch, it runs on a dedicated cycle path beside the L12 state road. For planning your ride, Wodorf is a landmark, and the route follows a separate cycle path.
Another cycling and hiking route runs from Groß Strömkendorf along the Breitling, via Damekow and Dreveskirchen, towards Stove-Boiensdorf. The two routes are described in different ways: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route reaches Blowatz and runs beside the L12 on a dedicated path; the other route is described by its stops and direction. This helps you take the route details given for each into account when planning.
Equestrian Tournaments and Rides
The Blowatz Riding and Driving Club’s tournament grounds were gradually developed by the municipality, with support from the LPG, into a tournament venue. The grounds include a thatched judges’ tower. The club’s history therefore encompasses both the development of the tournament grounds and their distinctive architectural feature.
The club has been holding equestrian tournaments for many years. Its recreational riders also meet for group rides. Tournaments and rides are distinct aspects of the club’s activities. If a tournament is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
Felting and Cultural Attractions
In Martina Weiß’s garden, visitors can felt their own ribbons; a felting table also invites them to try felting. In a round wooden pavilion, Martina Weiß displays felt-and-silk clothing, caps, backpacks and felt seat cushions. Visitors can create items themselves and view a range of felt products.
Wodorf is home to a thatched painter’s house, one of the sights in the region around Blowatz. Heidekaten is where the Mecklenburg painter Carl Hinrichs worked; it too is one of the sights in the region around Blowatz. The two places offer different points of interest: the thatched house in Wodorf and the connection to the painter in Heidekaten.
About 1,200 years ago, a large maritime trading center known as old Rerik stood west of Groß Strömkendorf on Wismar Bay. This early trading history is another historical point of interest on the bay.
