Boiensdorf on the Salzhaff: Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Boiensdorf
Boiensdorf appeals to a range of travel interests, with coastal landscapes on the Salzhaff, nature watching and activities on the water. When looking for a hotel, it is therefore worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your stay. The landscape is gently rolling, with fields, occasional patches of woodland and meadows. Art and the history of mills in Stove also offer a distinct theme for planning your trip.
Coastal landscapes and birdlife
The Boiensdorfer Werder Landscape Protection Area covers about 90 hectares and is largely undeveloped. Along the coast, there are natural stretches of shoreline and some steep banks. The landscape also includes salt marshes with lagoons and channels, which are extensively grazed by cattle. Shorelines, waterways and pastureland thus shape the different aspects of the protected area. Swimming and long beach walks are among the ways to enjoy nature there. In the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the north encompasses the Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay; to the south lies the West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.
The agricultural land on the Werder is an important resting place for migratory birds, including mute swans and northern shovelers. The species using the area may vary depending on the season. A viewpoint offers views across the Salzhaff, over Wustrow and onward to the open Baltic Sea. In the Boiensdorf area, there are also views across shallow water toward Wustrow and the bird sanctuary island of Langenwerder. Alongside the shoreline, bird resting areas and different perspectives on the coastal landscape are therefore options to consider.
Water activities and practical information
The Boiensdorf surf spot is a shallow-water area without large waves or currents. With westerly to northeasterly winds, the area where you can stand is 200 metres wide. Water conditions depend on the weather, so check them before planning an activity. Visitors from outside Boiensdorf can use the slipway at the beach for a fee. As fees may change, it is best to check the current arrangements in advance. Boiensdorf is also considered a starting point for fishing trips.
Art and the history of mills in Stove
The Stove Art House has a sculpture garden. Its grounds include a straw-bale and clay house, newly built as a studio in 2016. The Dutch windmill in Stove was built in 1889; its wind-powered mechanism and milling technology are fully preserved. Visitors can watch wheat and rye being milled into flour and then made into bread and baked goods. Demonstrations may vary.
Choosing a focus for your stay
Planning considerations also vary: bird use of the area may change seasonally, water conditions depend on the weather, and mill demonstrations may vary. The landscape features and the year the mill was built also provide lasting points of reference when choosing what to focus on.
