Kalkhorst: Church, History and Nature
Accommodation in Kalkhorst
Kalkhorst’s attractions range from St. Lawrence’s Church and the Schliemann Pavilion to historical experiences at the minimare Discovery Park and nature activities at Fischerkaten Nature Station. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether architecture and local history, hands-on history or outdoor activities should take priority. The castle park also adds its own cultural touch.
Church, Pavilion and Castle Park
St. Lawrence’s Church in Kalkhorst has stood at its present location since the 13th century. It has a Baroque altar dating from 1708. This means you can explore the church both through its long history at this location and through a specific, dated feature of its furnishings. Both details offer different historical reference points: the location points to the church’s long history in Kalkhorst, while the altar reflects a particular Baroque design.
The restored, octagonal Schliemann Pavilion stands in the church garden of the Kalkhorst parish. It is associated with Heinrich Schliemann, who is said to have studied there as a schoolboy. The building is presented as a local attraction. Unlike the church, the focus here is not only on the architecture but also on a traditional account of a personal connection. The cautious wording is part of the pavilion’s story: Schliemann is said to have studied there.
Kalkhorst Castle is surrounded by a 13-hectare park designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The area and the design style describe two different aspects of the grounds: their size and their landscape style. The park thus complements the sacred architecture and the history associated with the Schliemann Pavilion with another aspect of Kalkhorst’s cultural history.
Hands-on History at minimare
At the minimare Discovery Park in Kalkhorst, young and old can experience 1,000 years of Mecklenburg history in nine themed parks in a fun, engaging and interactive way. Rather than focusing on a single historic building, the park offers a broad introduction to history. The nine themed parks give the experience a thematic structure, while the long time span connects the presentation with the history of Mecklenburg.
The multifunctional building at minimare Discovery Park has its own special feature: it houses a shell museum. This means the park offers different topics alongside its historical exhibits. Unlike the church and pavilion, minimare focuses on an interactive experience spanning many historical periods, while each of the two buildings brings a specific architectural feature and local history into focus.
Nature Station and Outdoor Activities
Beach walks and discovery tours take place regularly at Fischerkaten Nature Station. The station is connected to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and can be reached by cyclists directly along the coastal route. If you want to take part in a guided tour, check the dates in advance. This lets you factor the regularly scheduled activities into your stay without assuming a particular date.
The natural beach in the former coastal border strip near Fischerkaten Nature Station is part of the European Natura 2000 protected area network. The Kalkhorst area also offers other ways to enjoy the outdoors: former patrol roads invite you to cycle, while beaches and natural tree-lined avenues are ideal for long walks. Views and sunsets are also among the area’s attractions. From the regular guided tours at the nature station to cycling along former patrol roads and longer walks on beaches or along avenues, there are various ways to explore the landscape.
Nordwestmecklenburg as a Regional Setting
In the wider travel region of Nordwestmecklenburg, the district encompasses the “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. The landscape of Nordwestmecklenburg also includes terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This broader context offers a wider view of the region’s landscape features.
