If you are looking for a hotel in Mühlen Eichsen, you can choose where to stay based on the things that matter to you during your visit: riverside scenery, church architecture and history. The Stepenitz flows through the town; the village church and manor house stand opposite each other. The surrounding area also includes dammed lakes with a bathing area, a milestone and a cremation burial ground. These features give you concrete points of reference for considering Mühlen Eichsen as a travel destination.

The Stepenitz and the bathing area

The small river Stepenitz flows through Mühlen Eichsen. It has been dammed to form lakes in several places, and there is a bathing area there. This means you encounter water in two forms in the town: as a flowing river and as dammed lakes with a bathing area. If you take this into account when choosing a destination, check the local conditions before planning a swim.

Village church and manor house

Mühlen Eichsen village church is a simple 14th-century Brick Gothic Evangelical Lutheran church. It stands on a steep hill above the Stepenitz and the former watermill. Its massive, square western tower is Late Gothic and has a hipped roof. To understand the architecture, you can consider the church and tower separately: the church dates to the 14th century and is built in the Brick Gothic style, while the tower stands out for its Late Gothic form and hipped roof.

Opposite the church stands Mühlen Eichsen Manor House, usually called the “castle” locally. An old park surrounds the house and is part of the manor estate. The church and manor house thus offer two distinct points of reference: the church on the hill above the Stepenitz, and the manor house opposite, associated with its park.

Milestone and watermill

The monument list of the Nordwestmecklenburg district, dated 28 February 2025, lists the manor house at Am Park 6 and its associated park. The watermill at Gadebuscher Straße 1 is also listed. Today it is a residential building only; the mill machinery has not been preserved. This current use is important to bear in mind: the mill is not an operating mill museum.

A milestone at Gadebuscher Straße 15 is also included in the monument list. It stands at the entrance to the town on the northwest side of the road leading toward Gadebusch and is a full-mile obelisk. This adds a clearly identified monument, with its own distinctive form and precisely specified location, to the larger buildings.

Archaeological site in the surrounding area

A cremation burial ground with around 5,000 burials dating from about 600 BC to 100 AD lies south of Mühlen Eichsen, in the surrounding area. It is one of the most significant burial grounds in the core area of the Jastorf culture. Its timeframe is long before the 14th-century village church and offers an archaeological perspective on the destination alongside its buildings. The cremation burial ground is therefore a separate historical point of interest in the surrounding area, not another building in the town.

Getting your bearings and the wider region

For regional orientation, Federal Highway 208 passes through the municipality of Mühlen Eichsen. It runs from Ratzeburg via Gadebusch to Wismar. These towns give you a road connection beyond Mühlen Eichsen and place the municipality in a wider context.

Nordwestmecklenburg district also encompasses a variety of landscapes. To the north lies the “Nordwestmecklenburg Uplands with Wismar Bay”; to the south, the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraines, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, stretches of steep and gently sloping coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This regional variety provides the wider setting; in Mühlen Eichsen itself, the focus is on the Stepenitz, the village church and the manor house.
