Amt Bad Doberan-Land: Coastal Paths, Protected Areas and Village Churches
Accommodation in Amt Bad Doberan-Land
In Amt Bad Doberan-Land, travel themes range from coastal landscapes and nature trails to village churches and regional crafts. For your planning, it is worth deciding on your main focus first: Would you like to make time for walks and landscapes, explore sporting activities or learn about historical and cultural details?
Coast, forest and sporting opportunities
The approximately 180-hectare Gespensterwald is part of the Stolteraa nature reserve. Along the 7- to 9-meter-high steep coast, there are opportunities for long walks, cycling and horseback riding. The woodland, protected status and coastline combine different nature experiences here; the activities mentioned also give you a concrete guide for planning your day.
In Wittenbeck, the area borders the KĂĽhlung landscape protection area to the southwest and the Wittenbecker Tannen to the east. Sporting activities include a golf complex with one 18-hole course and two 9-hole courses. There is also an approximately 2.5-kilometer-long natural beach with a steep coast around 4 to 8 meters high. The options therefore offer distinct focuses: golf courses on the one hand, and a longer stretch of beach and coastal landscape on the other. Take these specific interests into account when planning your trip, without treating the options as equivalent.
Nature trails and protected areas
Quellental has been designated a nature monument covering an area since 1984. Its landscape includes spring marshes, mineral-soil meadows and fen meadows. Alders and ash trees grow along the Glashäger Bach, with sedges and rushes lining the stream. Different habitats and plant communities thus come together in a small area. A nature walk around Quellental is about 8 kilometers long and takes four hours; it includes a coffee break in Glashagen. These details will help you set aside an appropriate amount of time for the walk.
HĂĽtter Wohld is also defined by several protected-area designations: it was designated a nature reserve in 1999 and a European protected area (FFH area) in 2004. A guided nature tour through the forest is offered along the chain of ponds created by the Cistercian monks. Dates are arranged upon personal request, and advance registration is required. The meeting point is the large parking lot in HĂĽtten. If you plan to join this tour, remember to make an inquiry and register in advance.
Village churches and crafts
The church in Rethwisch was probably built between 1306 and 1312. As a three-aisled stepped hall church, it is an example of North German Brick Gothic. Its furnishings include a valuable winged altarpiece: the central shrine depicts a crucifixion scene dating from 1530. The church’s design and altarpiece offer two different ways to explore its cultural history, from its architecture to a specific detail of its interior.
The church in Retschow contains a depiction of a mill that is considered unique among village churches in all of Germany. Glashagen Ausbau offers a different cultural experience: four resident artists work there in workshops for pottery, glassblowing, porcelain and driftwood. Visitors can view their work and, where applicable, purchase it. The options thus range from historical details in the churches to works in a variety of crafts.
