Local History and Cycling in Warnow

When choosing a destination, two different points of interest in Warnow are worth considering: local history and a cycling tour that passes through the village. Warnow was first mentioned in a document on June 17, 1261. The church cemetery lies in the middle of the village on a small hill and preserves several historic features.

Church and Cemetery

At the northwestern corner of the church cemetery stands an old chapel building, erected in 1855 as the hereditary burial place of the Schlockow estate. The surviving bell of Warnow church was cast in Wismar and consecrated for the Reformation Festival in 1852. The cemetery also contains the grave of hereditary leasehold farm owner Markus Dokrn, who died in 1896, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. Historic gravestones commemorate people who died in Schreckenstein in the Sudetenland; they probably came to Warnow as expellees. The chapel, bell and graves offer distinct traces of local memory. The church is considered worth a visit.

Paul-Friedrich Wöhlcke, Schmiedestraße 76, 18249 Warnow, is listed as the contact for the key to visit the church. If you would like to visit the church, check in advance whether and how it is possible to collect the key.

Cycling and Landscape

An approximately 22-kilometer cycling tour from Sternberg to Bützow passes through Warnow. The distance is an approximate guide; surfaces and signage may change. Check both before setting out.

The village of Eickhof is part of the municipality of Warnow and is home to another activity. There, a fish ladder has a whitewater course with small rapids that challenge canoeists’ skill and courage. On the way from Eickhof to Warnow, views open out across the Warnow floodplain; features include peat-cutting ponds in the fen, reed beds, grassland and wild strips of alluvial forest along the river. The municipality of Warnow lies on the edge of the Warnow-Mildenitz Breakthrough Valley Nature Reserve.

Rostock as the Wider Destination

In the wider destination of Rostock, Sternberger Seenland Nature Park—with its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests—especially invites visitors to hike and cycle. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park on their own or join guided wolf, owl and evening walks. These regional highlights offer a different choice of topics from Warnow’s churchyard, village history and cycling tour through the village: the nature park focuses on landscapes and routes, while the wildlife park offers guided walks. Another cultural and historical perspective is provided by the Wolhynian Resettler Museum in Linstow, in the wider destination of Rostock: tours featuring ethnographic objects, photographs and documents tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War.
