Roggentin: Local History and Nature
Roggentin offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: its early local history, cultural and sports activities at the village community centre, nature trails in the municipality and an indoor playground. When choosing your destination, you can first decide whether local history, hiking or a weather-independent leisure activity is your main priority. One important geographical distinction: Kösterbeck is a separate locality within the municipality of Roggentin, not the village of Roggentin itself.
Early Records and Local Cultural Life
Roggentin was first mentioned in official records in 1219 under the name Rokentin, as property of Sonnenkamp Monastery in Neukloster. Thus, the early local history brings together a precise year, an older form of the name and a specific ownership connection.
The village community centre serves as a cultural centre. It was created by refurbishing Roggentin’s former consumer cooperative building and was officially opened on 21 June 2001. Since then, it has provided space for cultural and sports activities, courses and other events. Hobby afternoons are held there regularly, bringing together older residents and other interested people. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular event, check the date in advance.
Another local landmark is the “Wooden Church”: since 2008, the Adventist congregation in Roggentin has held services there.
Hiking Trails and Nature in the Municipality
The Kösterbeck Nature Reserve is located within the municipality. All visitors may use the public hiking trails there that are owned by the municipality of Roggentin; the municipal works department maintains these trails on an ongoing basis. Information about their use and upkeep can help you make this natural area a distinct focus of your trip.
Kösterbeck is a popular starting point for excursions into the “Rostock Switzerland”, whose landscape can be explored on numerous hiking trails. The “Nature & Homeland” interest group of Volkssolidarität Roggentin organises annual themed talks, hikes, a cycling tour and a photography competition. It also regularly leads botanical walks and bird-song walks in the Kösterbeck Nature Reserve. These nature activities offer different focuses, from observing plants and listening to birdsong to exploring the landscape on hiking trails. If you are planning a particular tour or event, it is advisable to check the date in advance.
One specific crossing in the landscape is the wooden bridge over the Kösterbeck stream between Fresendorf and Beselin. The municipalities of Roggentin and Dummerstorf funded the bridge, which makes it possible to cross the stream.
Indoor Play and Getting There
Kinderland Rostock in Roggentin is an indoor playground with more than 2,200 square metres of play space. The facility includes a fun park, an area measuring 25 metres wide and 7.5 metres high, a giant bouncy hill, electric go-karts, a toddler play area, an eight-section trampoline facility, a climbing wall, ball cannons, eight giant slides and a multi-purpose football pitch. While Kösterbeck is known for its nature trails and guided wildlife activities, Kinderland brings together indoor play and exercise. Check the latest operating information before your visit.
Roggentin is on the Rostock–Tessin railway line. For the specified connection from Roggentin station to Rostock Central Station, the municipality gives a journey time of less than ten minutes. Check the current timetable for your specific journey, as actual travel times depend on traffic conditions.
