Culture and history in the wider destination of Dobin am See

The Buchholz Village Museum is dedicated to everyday life and regional history, from the earliest settlement to the present day. This broad time span provides a wide-ranging perspective, distinct from that of individual historic buildings. When weighing cultural themes for your trip, you can choose between a long view of everyday life and the region, and the history of a specific building. As the exhibits may change, check opening arrangements before your visit.

The site of the old Dobin castle is now part of the municipality of Dobin am See, which takes its name from the castle. Dobin Castle was a Slavic fortress built by the Obotrite prince Niklot in the 12th century between Lake Schwerin and Lake Döpe, near Neu Flessenow. The castle is associated with the battles of 1147 between the Christian forces of Henry the Lion, Danish troops, and the still-pagan Obotrites under Prince Niklot. The castle dates to the 12th century, while 1147 is the specific year associated with the battles fought there.

Retgendorf Village Church is a Gothic brick church with a three-panel carved winged altar. Its architectural form and altar offer distinct architectural and art-historical features. At the starting point of the Niklot Trail in Retgendorf, beside a legend stone, there is an information board about the legend “The Castle in the Lake.” Architecture and storytelling thus offer different cultural points of interest in the wider destination. A municipal cultural information notice dated March 13, 2024, describes the Blaue Acht route as a way to explore local legends on foot or by bicycle.
