If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Gnewitz, you can sort the local attractions by interest: the former beet railway represents transport history, the “Northern Beet Railway Tour” cycling route includes a specific stop at the loading station, and the hikes lead to the village pond, towards the Recknitz Valley or to megalithic tombs. A manor house and a park add to the local points of interest. When planning, you can decide whether cycling, hiking or the history of beet transport by rail should shape your stay.

Beet railway: historic terminus and cycling route

Gnewitz is home to the former terminus of the northern branch of the beet railway. The narrow-gauge network, which covered around 45 kilometres, ran from Tessin to destinations including Gnewitz. Its approximate length gives a sense of the scale of the network: the Gnewitz terminus was part of a transport system that extended beyond the individual village.

At the former endpoint, a horse and cart illustrate how sugar beets were transported from the fields to the loading station and tipped from the ramp into open wooden wagons. The process draws attention both to the journey from the field and to the transfer of goods at the ramp. This makes it possible to understand the former railway not just as a route, but also in terms of freight transport.

The “Northern Beet Railway Tour” cycling route is a separate option for cyclists: Gnewitz’s loading station is its fourth stop. The route runs mostly along well-maintained cycle paths or lightly trafficked roads and is suitable for children. This distinction helps when choosing between the two beet railway-related attractions: the narrow-gauge network is part of transport history, while the cycling route lists the loading station as one of its stops.

Hiking through Gnewitz and to the megalithic tombs

One hike passes through Gnewitz to the village pond at the edge of the village, then continues towards the Recknitz Valley. Another tour, “From Zarnewanz to the Megalithic Tombs”, goes through the forest to Gnewitz and then on to several megalithic tombs just beyond Neu Gnewitz. The Gnewitz megalithic tomb itself is also a historic monument and an attraction in Gnewitz. The destinations described are different: the village pond and the Recknitz Valley provide the landmarks for one hike, while the other leads to the megalithic tombs beyond Neu Gnewitz.

The protected-area designation also adds to the landscape’s context: the EU Special Protection Area “Recknitz and Trebel Valleys with Side Valleys and Farmland” includes, among other places, the municipality of Gnewitz in the Amt Tessin. There is also a manor house and a park at Am Park 4 in Gnewitz. These named places and attractions complement the route descriptions, without making cycling or hiking the only way to experience Gnewitz.

Gnewitz in the wider Rostock destination

The wider Rostock destination offers another landscape setting. The Rostock region is surrounded by 62 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, with a number of seaside resorts; the coastal hinterland includes the river valleys of the Warnow and the Recknitz. Sternberg Lake District Nature Park features deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests, and is particularly suited to hiking and cycling.
