Groß Lüsewitz offers travellers three distinct points of interest: Groß Lüsewitz Castle, a tree discovery trail and Groß Lüsewitzer See with its bathing area. You can plan your stay around architecture, exploring the outdoors independently or spending time by the water. For castle visits and cultural events, the relevant programme items are important; for train journeys, check the timetable for your travel day.

Visiting the castle and its architecture

Groß Lüsewitz Castle is a castle complex in the Neo-Renaissance style, built between 1896 and 1898. Access arrangements are important for your visit: the castle can only be viewed as part of the programme items on offer. Check in advance which programme items are available during your travel dates. This will allow you to plan your castle visit around a suitable programme.

Tree discovery trail: explore independently or join a guided tour

You can explore the tree discovery trail on your own. Overview maps and pocket-sized descriptions of the trees help you find your way independently. A public guided tour offers a different focus, explaining marked trees and botanical rarities. You can therefore choose between exploring independently with maps and joining a tour with explanations. If a guided tour is important to you, check in advance which dates fall during your stay.

Bathing area and arriving by train

Groß Lüsewitzer See is about 400 m from the castle. There is a restaurant on the lake terrace at the small bathing area. The bathing area is child- and family-friendly, and the bathing water quality is very good.

Groß Lüsewitz railway station provides a train connection for travellers without a car. Regional trains run hourly towards Wismar via Rostock and in the opposite direction to Tessin, so you can also explore the surrounding area without a car. For your specific journey, it is advisable to check the timetable for your travel day.

Cultural events and the See- und Parkfest

The See- und Parkfest held its 26th edition in 2025. The festival opened with a vernissage at Groß Lüsewitz Castle and a concert featuring vocals and guitar. The children’s programme included face painting, craft stations, a bouncy castle, a giant water slide and pony rides. The 2025 edition thus combined art, music and several activities for children. If a festival date is important for your trip, check the dates and programme for the year you have in mind.

The history group of the Kulturhistorischer Verein Groß Lüsewitz e.V. will also resume its public meetings every other month in 2026. Those interested can learn about the village’s history or discuss it at the meetings. Check the dates if you would like to include this opportunity to meet and talk in your stay.

Culture and routes in the wider Sanitz destination

In the wider destination of Sanitz, the village church was built in the 13th century. This substantial fieldstone building has a half-timbered tower. Inside is an altar with paintings by Rudolph Suhrlandt dating from around 1800. The Alte Schmiede in Sanitz was first documented in 1798 and is a late-Baroque oak half-timbered building. The grounds of the Alte Schmiede are protected as a historic monument; a direct visit is not possible because the property is private.

Routes in Sanitz also offer varied landscapes: the 36-kilometre circular route starts at Sanitz railway station, passes through Wendfeld, Reppelin, Wendorf, Neu-Wendorf, Stormsdorf, Zarnewanz, Tessin and Horst, and returns to Sanitz. The Kleine Waldrunde Sanitz walking trail leads north from the old village through woodland along sandy clearings.
