Baabe: Beach, Promenade and Mönchguttor
Accommodation in Baabe
Baabe combines a fine sandy beach with water sports, a promenade, a harbor and cultural sites. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether the beach is your main priority or whether trails and regional topics also suit your stay.
Beach and water sports
Baabe’s beach is 1.5 km long and consists of fine sand. There are 17 beach access points. The beach’s length and number of access points are useful reference points if the beach is important to your travel plans. Beach activities include stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Since availability may vary by season, take the water sports options into account when making your specific plans.
Promenade and planning your routes
Baabe’s beach promenade is an extension of Göhren’s “Bernsteinpromenade” and continues from Baabe to the Baltic resort of Sellin. It is also a suitable starting point for walks in the direction of Sellin or Göhren. The route of the promenade and the directions given for walks should be distinguished: the promenade reaches Sellin, while both directions are mentioned for walks.
The transport information also concerns different connections. Bus route 25 connects the Baltic resorts of Baabe and Sellin. The Bäderbahn takes visitors to sights, the beach and key locations in the towns. When planning your journeys, don’t treat these details as interchangeable: the bus route connects Baabe and Sellin, while the destinations listed refer to the Bäderbahn. Routes and services may change, so check the latest transport information.
Harbor and ferry connection
The Baaber Bollwerk, or harbor, has berths for 25 pleasure boats and two passenger ships. A rowing-boat ferry runs from Baabe Harbor to the opposite bank of the Having, taking visitors and bicycles to Moritzburg. The harbor and ferry connection are therefore two distinct aspects of the town’s relationship with the water. If you plan to take the ferry, check the latest operating details before your trip; information about the harbor facilities may also change.
History, fishing and library
The Mönchguttor in Baabe marks the boundary between the Mönchgut peninsula and the rest of Rügen. Built in 2003, the gate is decorated with wooden figures of a female farmer, a fisherman, a monk and a knight. These figures are important representations of the region’s history and culture. At Fischerstrand, by beach access point 5, you can watch fishermen at work. Fishing has a long tradition in Baabe, though whether you can observe it depends on fishing activity at the time.
The Mönchgut Library is located in the Haus des Gastes in Baabe. Access to its collection is available to holders of a valid spa card. The collection contains around 9,450 books, including around 4,200 works of fiction, 3,000 non-fiction books and 2,250 children’s and young adult books. The library therefore offers fiction as well as non-fiction and children’s literature. As the collection and access rules may change, check them before planning a visit.
Events throughout the year
The Baltic resort of Baabe offers a year-round program of events, including festivals, spa concerts, children’s activities and readings for visitors of all ages. The program changes, so if you’d like to attend a particular event during your stay, check the current events calendar.
