Göhren can be explored through three distinct themes: the wooded Nordperd, the fine sandy Baltic Sea beach and prominent landmarks in the town’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Göhren, these highlights can help you narrow down your choice of destination: Would you mainly like to experience the landscape and trails, spend time at the beach, or also explore the town’s history?

Wooded Göhren Nordperd

Göhren Nordperd rises up to 60 metres above sea level and forms the easternmost point of the island of Rügen. Its forest lies within the core zone of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and remains largely untouched. Here, a distinctive geographical feature meets an unspoilt natural character.

A circular trail along the high coastal cliffs runs around Nordperd, offering views across the Baltic Sea. The landscape and the trail are two different ways to explore the area: Nordperd is the wooded landform, while the circular trail offers a way to experience the surroundings on foot. If you’d like to appreciate Göhren not only for its beach but also for its elevated coastline, this combination of forest and sea views is a defining feature.

Beach and coastal structure

Göhren’s fine sandy beach slopes gently into the water, making it especially suitable for young explorers and adventurers. This coastal highlight is quite different from the wooded Nordperd: here, the focus is on sand and the gentle entry into the water; there, it is on forest, elevation and views across the Baltic Sea. Which appeals more to you during your stay depends on what interests you most about Göhren.

At the foot of Nordperd, right on the Baltic Sea, there is a 450-metre-long pier. It was built in 1907 and 1908 to protect the cliff. The pier adds a structure to the natural coastal landscape, and its function and construction dates offer a distinct perspective on local history. This makes it possible to understand the area through both its landscape and the ways people have managed the coast.

Buskam and the village church

The glacial erratic Buskam also brings together a distinctive name and a possible historical interpretation. The name derives from the Old Slavic “bogis kamin” and means “God’s stone”. Small hollows on the stone’s upper surface suggest that it may have been used as a place of worship as early as the Bronze Age. This use remains a theory; the combination of its traditional meaning and possible early use makes Buskam a particularly interesting subject in Göhren’s local history.

Another point of historical interest is the village church in Göhren. Consecrated in 1930, it is a simply designed, single-nave church with two brick-roofed towers. Its unadorned design contrasts with the natural coastal setting and adds a specific building with a known consecration year to the story of the town.

Getting around the town

The BUSkam local bus runs through the centre of Göhren, from the North Beach to the South Beach. If you’re planning your journeys around town using this service, check the current timetable before travelling: operating hours and journey times may change. The bus can help you plan your way around without relying on outdated departure information.

Göhren in the wider Vorpommern-Rügen destination

The district of Vorpommern-Rügen, the wider destination, includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz. The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of the district. The wider region is estimated to have around 60 museums.

Nature and culture in this region extend beyond Göhren: the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. In Stralsund, the old town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. These examples place Göhren’s coastal and local history within the wider destination of Vorpommern-Rügen.
