Hiddensee Island – Dune Heath, Coastal Paths and Culture
Accommodation in Hiddensee Island
When choosing a destination for your hotel stay, Hiddensee offers several specific points of interest: coastal scenery, marked paths and notable cultural sites. Highlights range from the dune heath between Vitte and Neuendorf to walks through forests and across meadows, as well as beach paths with views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding islands. There is also the Gerhart Hauptmann House and the island church. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether nature, outdoor activities or culture should shape your stay.
Dune Heath and Paths
Hiddensee’s dune heath is one of the last large coastal dune heaths on the German Baltic coast. It covers 120 hectares between Vitte and Neuendorf and is crisscrossed by numerous small sandy paths. It is also part of the European protected area “Westrügen Lagoon Landscape with Hiddensee” (EU code DE 1544-302). Its size, location and protected-area status make it a distinctive landscape on the island.
Hiddensee has well-signposted and marked hiking trails through forests and across meadows. Beach walks follow the coast and offer views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding islands. Together, they offer two distinct landscape experiences: woodland and meadow paths on one hand, and the coastline and its views on the other. If you enjoy walking, you can choose your focus based on whether woodland and meadow paths or views across the water matter more to you.
Another specific landmark to help you find your way is the “De Lütt Küst” nature trail in Vitte, which runs right next to the Hiddensee National Park Centre. Unlike the coastal walks, this trail is specifically associated with Vitte; the beach walks, by contrast, focus on the coast.
Getting There by Water
Hiddensee can only be reached by water. Hiddensee Shipping connects the island with Schaprode on Rügen and directly with Stralsund. As ferry timetables vary by season, check the timetable before travelling. Private car traffic is not permitted on Hiddensee. Guests can use two large car parks in Schaprode: one at the entrance to the village, with a shuttle service, and the other right by the harbour. Parking regulations and fees may change. Include these details in your travel plans before deciding how to spend your time on the island exploring its landscapes and culture.
Culture on Hiddensee
The Gerhart Hauptmann House in Kloster on Hiddensee features a permanent exhibition about the poet’s life and work and his relationship with Hiddensee. It also includes works created on the island and current theatre productions of Hauptmann’s plays. For culture enthusiasts, the house brings together the poet, his connection to the island and his works for the stage.
Hiddensee Island Church was built in the early 14th century by monks from the Cistercian monastery and consecrated in 1332. It complements the literary perspective with the history of a medieval church building. The two sites represent different cultural themes that you can weigh separately when planning your trip: literature and theatre at the Gerhart Hauptmann House, and architectural history at the island church.
