Kluis between landscape and architectural history

Kluis lies on the Duwenbeek, the only larger flowing body of water on Rügen. The Duwenbeek provides the municipality with a distinct landscape landmark. Other points of interest for planning your trip include Schlosspark Pansevitz, the manor house in Silenz and the roads around Kluis. Depending on whether you are interested in the history of parks and gardens, historic architectural styles or cycling, you can explore different themes during your stay. The district of Vorpommern-Rügen includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz.

Schlosspark Pansevitz and the tower ruins

Schlosspark Pansevitz is a public park and a living monument to a park and garden landscape preserved by FriedWald Rügen. A regional tourism association counts the park among the most valuable parks on Rügen. The park also contains a FriedWald for alternative burials beneath trees.

In one of the two tower ruins of Pansevitz Castle, a spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform with expansive views. For those interested in architecture, this combination of tower ruin, staircase and platform provides a distinctive architectural feature alongside the park landscape.

Historic architecture in Silenz

The manor house in Silenz, Kluis, is a two-storey half-timbered eaves-fronted house dating from the 18th century. Its defining details include rendered brick infill, a tall dormer and a half-hipped roof topped with a crown. The half-timbering and brick infill describe different parts of the wall structure; the dormer and roof shape define the upper part of the house. With a half-hipped roof, the gable ends are shortened by sloping roof planes. This means the building can be classified not only by its age, but also by specific features of its construction.

Roads and directions

For road navigation, distinguish between the B96 and the L30: the B96 federal highway runs east of the municipality of Kluis. In Kluis, the L30 regional road branches off towards Gingst and towards Wittower Fähre on the Wittow peninsula. Thus, the B96 indicates the road’s position east of the municipal area, while the L30 gives two directions from Kluis. Check the road layout before planning a detailed route.
