Neuenkirchen: Church, Hiking Trail and Natural Landscape
Accommodation in Neuenkirchen
Neuenkirchen is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen on the Lebbin Peninsula in western Rügen. The village combines a striking Protestant parish church with natural landscapes and hiking trails: the Bodden Panorama Trail starts here, while large parts of the peninsula belong to the Tetzitzer See nature reserve. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Neuenkirchen, these different features can help you plan around culture, hiking and landscape.
Church and Architectural History
The Protestant parish church of Neuenkirchen stands on the Lebbin Peninsula in western Rügen. Its present Gothic brick form was created between 1380 and 1450. At the south portal, a medieval holy water basin is set into a fieldstone. At the church, you can therefore see both features of its architecture and a finely crafted detail at the portal.
Inside is a Renaissance pulpit dating from 1567, originally from St. Mary’s Church in Bergen. A bell whose original date goes back to 1367 is considered the oldest on Rügen. It was recast in 1901. The pulpit and bell thus represent different periods: the pulpit dates from the Renaissance, while the bell bears an earlier date and was also altered later.
The church is freely accessible at all times. Check access information before your visit. Those interested in church architecture and historic furnishings will find several specific points of interest in one place.
Hiking, Views and Nature Conservation
Large parts of the Lebbin Peninsula, where Neuenkirchen is located, belong to the Tetzitzer See nature reserve. The reserve’s features include salt meadows, brackish-water reed beds and varied forests. Cranes and geese can often be observed there; sightings are seasonal and may vary depending on when you travel. The landscape thus brings together different habitats and opportunities for wildlife watching, with the timing playing a role in planning.
The Bodden Panorama Trail starts in Neuenkirchen, is 24 kilometres long and reaches Neu Mukran. Its starting point, total length and destination make it easy to plan as a hike in its own right. The Johann-Jacob-Grümbke observation tower on Hoch Hilgor offers a different focus: from there, the view extends to Cape Arkona and Hiddensee. While the trail’s stated length makes it a clearly defined route option, the tower offers long-distance views as a natural attraction in its own right.
In neighbouring Vieregge, the marina offers stand-up paddleboard and motorboat rentals. If you plan to try either option, check availability in advance, as it may change.
Art and Everyday Life in the Village
Everyday village life also includes a small traditional shop, considered a Tante-Emma-Laden—a traditional corner shop. If you plan to shop there, check current availability before your trip.
