Discover Rambin: Culture and Bodden Landscape
Accommodation in Rambin
Rambin is a good base for excursions around the island of Rügen or to the mainland. A variety of interests come together here: churches and the local history museum offer insights into cultural history, while walks and cycle rides lead into the Bodden landscape. There is also a seasonal gathering at the bread oven and a gallery with changing exhibitions. You can tailor your hotel stay to culture, the landscape or both.
Churches, Monastery and Local History Museum
St. John’s Church in Rambin was first mentioned in a document in 1300, making it one of the oldest churches on the island of Rügen. Its furnishings include a 13th-century baptismal font, a late-medieval triumphal cross and a late-medieval carved figure of Mary with the Child. The baptismal font is the oldest furnishing. These dates refer to different historical points: the 1300 mention relates to the church, while the other dates apply to its furnishings.
Other buildings have their own distinctive features. The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Bessin is an octagonal Gothic brick building. The chapel in the Monastery of St. Jürgen in Rambin now houses a gallery with changing exhibitions. The two-storey brick building at the monastery is considered a pure example of Neoclassical architecture. Rambin thus offers a range of architectural styles alongside a current gallery programme.
The Rambin Local History Museum has no fixed opening hours and opens for association events. You can arrange guided tours or visits individually with the museum management or the board. Make arrangements in advance if visiting the museum is important to your travel plans. It preserves an almost complete collection of agricultural tools and machinery. The collection was assembled at the former farm of farmer Friedrich Herud in Götemitz and illustrates German agriculture in the first half of the 19th century. Its collection, provenance and historical period give the museum a specific focus on agricultural history.
From April to September, the “Rambin Talks at the Bread Oven” take place at the local history museum at 5 p.m. on the last Friday of each month. Fresh bread is baked, and there are also talks and group discussions. Check the current annual schedule in advance if you would like to include the event in your trip.
Dining and the Bodden Landscape
The Rügen Farmers’ Market Alte Pommernkate in Rambin offers breakfast, regional lunch dishes, homemade cakes, a farm grill and a fish stand. The range includes options from breakfast and cake to grilled food and fish, adding a dining option to the cultural and landscape attractions.
The Bodden landscape near Rambin can be explored on walks and cycle rides, where you may spot wild geese and cranes. There is a specific destination for a cycle ride: cycle paths from Rambin lead to Lake Karow. From there, you can enjoy impressive views of the Kubitzer Bodden and across the salt marshes. Lake Karow is therefore one possible focal point for a ride, while the Bodden landscape can also be explored more generally on walks and cycle rides. Fishing is another activity available in the adjacent Kubitzer Bodden.
Getting There and Planning Excursions
From Stralsund, you can reach Rambin via the “Altefähr/Rambin” exit on the B96n, then take the old main road through Rambin. The village is also a good base for excursions around the island of Rügen or to the mainland. This lets you combine local cultural attractions and outdoor activities with trips around the island or to the mainland, depending on what you want to focus on during your stay.
