Trent on Rügen: Church, art and active days by the water
Accommodation in Trent
Trent is a municipality on the island of Rügen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. When planning your trip, it helps to choose activities based on your interests: St. Catherine’s Church combines architectural history with its location on the old herring road, while the ferry, cycling tours and seasonal kitesurfing lessons add active options. Music and art offer other points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether cultural events or activities on a bike or by the water should be the focus of your stay.
Plan ferry connections and activities
Vaschvitz is part of the municipality of Trent and lies on the Rassower Strom in northern Rügen. From there, the Wittow Ferry runs to the Wittow peninsula. It carries pedestrians and vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of up to 30 tonnes. If you plan to take the ferry as part of a day’s travel, check the timetable in advance and coordinate the crossing with your other plans.
The Great Rügen Cycle Tour can start in Trent; its route is 126 kilometres long. This makes it a standalone option for anyone planning an extended cycling trip. Seasonal kitesurfing lessons, including beginner instruction in shallow water, are offered in Vaschvitz from May to September. Check the specific course dates before your trip. For the cycle tour, the published route length is a planning guide; for the kitesurfing lessons, it is the limited season.
St. Catherine’s Church: architectural history and planning your visit
St. Catherine’s Church in Trent dates from the 14th century and is a Brick Gothic building. It is known as a wayside church for its location on the old herring road towards Vitt, where it serves as a place for travellers to pause. The oldest surviving part of the present church building is the choir, dated to around 1400. Trent itself also has a long history: the village was first mentioned in 1311 and developed into an important agricultural and trading centre in the 14th century.
According to the notice, visits to the church are possible from May to October or by prior arrangement. Confirm that a visit is possible before your trip. Concerts are also held at St. Catherine’s during the summer concert season in July and August. Check the latest dates if you plan to attend a concert.
Music, architecture and regional cuisine
The Kunstscheune Vaschvitz presents music ranging from Baroque to jazz and music theatre. It offers another musical destination for travellers who want to include a variety of musical genres in their trip alongside the church’s architecture.
Gutshaus Libnitz stands out for its extensive stables and a mausoleum modelled on ancient Greek architecture. In Trent, the Fähreck inn serves home-style cooking and homemade ice cream. Alongside history and music, visitors can therefore choose from distinctive architecture and a specific dining option.
