Deyelsdorf combines a rich architectural and organ history with nature experiences in the districts of Bassendorf and Fäsekow. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: the architecture of the palace church and its historic organ, or the stops and themes along the experience trails.

Palace Church: Architectural History and Features

The Renaissance church in Deyelsdorf was built between 1601 and 1606 in the style of Protestant palace churches, under the responsibility of the church’s patron at the time, Caspar Behr. In 1872, it was given its present Neo-Renaissance appearance by the Wismar architect Heinrich Thormann. Its architectural history thus brings together different eras. Other features described include shallow ribbed vaults with ornamental painting. A marble sculpture of Christ blessing, in the style of Thorvaldsen, is set into the gallery as part of the altar design. The vaults, painting, and sculpture offer a glimpse of the church’s different design elements. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

An Organ with Several Historic Chapters

The palace church houses a Schnitger/Mehmel organ. Arp Schnitger built the organ in 1694 as a house organ for Dr. Johann Friedrich Mayer, then senior pastor at St. Jacobi in Hamburg. Another chapter in its history concerns the manual keyboard: Friedrich Friese I originally built it for the Friese I organ in Spornitz. Friedrich Albert Mehmel installed it in the Deyelsdorf organ in expanded form in 1878, when the organ was enlarged. The details about the organ and its keyboard therefore tell different parts of the instrument’s story, from the component’s original purpose to its later installation in Deyelsdorf.

The organ’s layout can also be described briefly: it has eight stops, distributed across one manual and a pedal. Together with the details about Schnitger, Friese, and Mehmel, this makes it a point of interest for travelers interested in historic organs and their development. When considering its history, it is worth distinguishing the organ’s early construction from its later enlargement and the installation of the keyboard; the years given refer to different stages.

Trebel Valley Experience Trail and Bassendorf

In the forested area of Fäsekow, a district of Deyelsdorf, the Trebel Valley Experience Trail includes a hiking route with five stops and a length of about three kilometers. There are things to discover and explore at each stop, and the white-tailed eagle “SIGGI” sets a task at each one. The signs have QR codes with more information about the respective topics. The route, stops, and digital additions are different elements of the trail: the stops structure the experience, while the QR codes provide additional information about each topic. The approximate length can help you decide whether to make the trail a separate part of your itinerary. Check current access conditions before planning your visit.

Bassendorf is also part of Deyelsdorf and offers a different focus. There is a nature experience trail there, as well as a landing stage for paddle boats on the Trebel. The landing stage offers a connection to the water, while the nature trails focus on discoveries on foot. Bassendorf manor house is said to have been built around 1780 and has retained its Baroque character to this day. The manor house thus adds another architectural theme to the palace church’s older history. If you plan to use the paddle-boat landing stage, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.

When looking for hotels in Deyelsdorf, you can first consider which focus suits your trip: the architectural and organ history of the palace church, the activities and information along the Trebel Valley Experience Trail, or the nature and architecture of Bassendorf. This lets you plan around the town’s specific features without limiting yourself to just one kind of visit.
