Bonn offers a wide variety of reasons to visit: Ludwig van Beethoven’s birthplace, traces of Roman history, museums, greenhouses and church music. You can tailor your itinerary to the topics that interest you most. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between museums and historical attractions you can visit at your leisure and offerings with specific visiting hours or seasonal dates.

Beethoven and Roman heritage

The Beethoven-Haus is a museum in central Bonn, located at Ludwig van Beethoven’s birthplace. Its permanent exhibition spans twelve rooms and presents more than 100 original exhibits. The birthplace and exhibition give your visit a clear focus on Beethoven. You can reach the Beethoven-Haus on tram lines 62, 65, 66 and 67, getting off at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz or Beethoven-Haus. Check the current connections before travelling, as traffic information may change.

The Roman camp “Castra Bonnensia” in Bonn is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Lower German Limes”. The layout of its buildings can still be made out in the street plan today. Another way to explore Roman history is the Roman tour offered by Bonn-Information for families with children aged 6 to 12; it leads through the former legionary camp. In Bonn-Castell, the “Didinkirica” presentation area is also open to pre-registered visitor groups. This offers several different ways to engage with the site: historical heritage visible in the street plan, a tour for a specific age group and a visit for registered groups.

Museums and art

The LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn presents the cultural history of the Rhineland over 400,000 years in its inclusive and participatory permanent exhibition. Its scope therefore extends beyond any single historical period. At Museum Koenig, an introductory tour offers insights into the museum’s history, research and permanent exhibition. You can reach Museum Koenig on underground lines 16, 63 and 66, getting off at Museum Koenig.

The Kunstmuseum Bonn offers a different focus: its free audio guide app explains 37 stops, from Classical Modernism to the present day. This range brings together different phases of art in a tour of the exhibits. If you are planning your visit around a particular offering, check the latest visitor information and transport updates beforehand.

Plant worlds and outdoor visits

The Botanical Gardens cultivate around 10,000 plant species from 388 plant families. In the greenhouses, visitors can experience the plant life of the tropics, subtropics, monsoon regions and deserts. This makes the gardens a destination in their own right for anyone interested in exploring different plant regions. The palace garden offers seasonal blooms throughout the year, as well as places to sit by the pond. Alongside the flowers, it is a place to sit by the water.

Church music and seasonal dates

The Kreuzkirche is open for sightseeing and prayer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. It is also a venue for outstanding church music and particularly festive services in Bonn. Its opening hours and musical role appeal to different interests: you can plan a visit for sightseeing or prayer, and also take its importance for services and church music into account.

One event with specific dates is the flea market in Freizeitpark Rheinaue: it takes place from April to October, on the third Saturday of each month. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the date before travelling. Alongside the year-round plant attractions, this distinction can help with planning: some of Bonn’s attractions can be enjoyed independently of a particular monthly event, while others depend on specific opening hours or event dates.
