In Velen, the history of its castle, insights into traditional crafts and cycling each offer a different focus. Velen Castle, the historic museum sites in Velen and Ramsdorf, and the wildlife park provide a range of themes to consider when planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Velen, first consider whether culture, the landscape or cycling between the museum sites will be the main focus of your stay.

Castle history and the townscape

The dates refer to two places: a castle already stood on the site of Velen Castle around 1245; the origins of Ramsdorf Castle date back to 1425. Over the centuries, renowned master builders transformed Velen Castle into the “fairytale castle of the Münsterland.” The castle is close to the town center; the historic wildlife park adjoins Velen Castle and is one of the Münsterland’s most noteworthy parklands. The architectural history and adjoining parkland therefore offer distinct focuses for planning a trip.

Crafts, agriculture and local history

The listed Old Beckmann Forge houses a complete blacksmith’s workshop and is one of five sites of the Living Museum in Velen and Ramsdorf. In the cellars of Ramsdorf Castle Museum, an exhibition explores the nearby burial mounds. At Tenk-Dröning Farm, historic equipment and engaging demonstrations explain how the potato came to Europe, why it was once called “Tartuffel” and how it is traditionally dug out of the ground. The Doskerschoppen at Picker-Warnsing Farm displays part of the Doskerkerls’ collection of historic agricultural machinery. Visitors can learn about the machines, their uses and their importance to farm work.

The two farms offer different focuses: Tenk-Dröning combines the history of the potato with traditional harvesting, while the Doskerschoppen explains the machinery in terms of its uses and importance to agriculture. During guided tours at the Gut Roß sawmill, visitors can experience the mechanics of the waterwheel, shafts and transmission systems. Tours are available by appointment; arrange a time in advance.

Cultural additions in the Borken travel destination

In the wider Borken travel destination, Gemen Water Castle offers a distinct historical attraction. Built more than 900 years ago, it stands on two islands in the former marshland of the Bocholter Aa. Since 1946, the Diocese of Münster has operated it as a youth education center under the name “Jugendburg Gemen.” The kult Westmünsterland in Vreden also offers a distinctive perspective on the history and culture of the Westmünsterland and the neighboring Dutch region of Achterhoek. The permanent exhibition explores borders through the themes of trade and transport, smuggling and law, faith and religion, globalization and regional identity, and past and present.
