Hiking and cycling in Euskirchen District

Public transport in Euskirchen District makes it possible to take point-to-point hikes without returning to your starting point. Buses and trains offer options for taking bicycles along on cycling trips. This means you can plan your hiking and cycling days in different ways; services and bicycle transport rules may change. So check current transport conditions before setting off.

A 13.5-kilometer circular route runs along Olef Lake. It is suitable for hiking and cycling. As a circular route, it calls for different planning than a point-to-point hike without returning to the starting point: you can plan your trip either as a loop or, using public transport, as a route from one starting point to a different destination.

The EifelSchleife Burg Satzvey is an easy hike covering 7.4 kilometers. The start and finish are at the Katzenstein hiking car park in Mechernich; the walking time is 1 hour and 36 minutes. At the Mechernich trailhead, the Katzensteine rise up to 15 meters as a Buntsandstein sandstone rock formation. This connects practical route planning with a striking geological feature of the area.

The Planet Trail near Effelsberg offers a different scale: opened in autumn 2004, it is just under 800 meters long and uses information boards to explain the Sun and the planets in our solar system. Compared with the 7.4-kilometer EifelSchleife, it is a much shorter themed route focused on astronomical information.

The visitor mine and Roman bathing culture

At the Grube Wohlfahrt visitor mine, the Tiefen Stollen and several side galleries are accessible over a total of around 900 meters. Guided tours start at the mine house. The approximate length describes the gallery system; for a visit, a guided tour is the appropriate format provided by the visitor mine.

In ZĂĽlpich, the Roman Baths present 2,000 years of bathing history above an exceptionally well-preserved Roman bathing complex. The focus here is therefore not just on a single find, but on the long history of bathing, presented at a preserved Roman site. For children, the activities on offer include interactive hands-on stations, sensory experiences involving smells, ancient games and varied treasure hunts. This adds a range of opportunities to participate and explore to the historical focus.

Nature programs and wildlife watching

The Eifel Nature Centre offers guided excursions and seminars, as well as varied programs for children and school classes. Regular events cover topics such as fossil hunting, beekeeping and the lives of the Romans in Nettersheim. The subjects therefore range from natural history to history. As individual dates may change, check the current event schedule if you would like to plan for a specific activity.

The Hellenthal Bird of Prey Station holds flight shows featuring birds of prey ranging from the Eurasian pygmy owl to the bald eagle. The species mentioned therefore range from a small owl to a large eagle. Show schedules may change; check the current dates before your visit.

The Hellenthal Wildlife Park covers 64 hectares and is home to dozens of wild and domestic animal species. Together with the flight shows, this gives Hellenthal a focus on animals across different themes: wild and domestic animals at the park, and birds of prey in the flight shows. Animal numbers and populations may change.
