If you are looking for a hotel in Spenge, you can plan your stay around different interests: historic buildings and churches, or paths around Hücker Moor. The places and routes below give you an idea of what you can discover in Spenge. For specific details on location and facilities, refer to the individual hotel listings.

Werburg and Mühlenburg Castle

The Werburg ensemble offers a glimpse into Spenge’s early architectural history. Its buildings belonged to a lowland castle first mentioned in a document in 1468. The eastern gatehouse and parts of the manor house are examples of the Weser Renaissance. If you are interested in architectural styles, you can learn about both the history of the castle complex and the specific architectural classification of individual parts of the buildings.

Mühlenburg Castle offers a different perspective on historic buildings: the castle, the park pond and the courtyard well can be viewed from the outside. At Werburg, the focus is on the ensemble and its Renaissance architecture; at Mühlenburg, it is on the exterior view of the castle and water features.

Churches as historical landmarks

St. Mary’s Church in Wallenbrück is Spenge’s oldest church. Its Romanesque tower dates from the 12th century. The church also houses an organ dating from 1624, considered the third-oldest in Westphalia. Several historical points of interest come together here, from the medieval tower to the 17th-century instrument.

The present-day St. Martin’s Church was built in the second half of the 13th century. The St. Martin’s altar, dating from the 15th century, has been back in the church since 1993. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can regard these dates as different reference points in the history of the two churches.

Hücker Moor: lake and circular trail

A lake of around twelve hectares dominates the landscape at Hücker Moor. It formed after peat extraction ended and the excavation basin filled with water. Hücker Moor is the largest body of water in the Herford district. Activities at the lake include walks along the shore, boating and dining at establishments with direct access to the lake. As facilities and offerings may change, check in advance what is currently available.

A circular trail around 3.5 kilometres long leads around Hücker Moor; the viewpoint at Paradies offers views of the moor. The southern shore is a protected zone and may not be entered. Observe this restriction and check the notices in effect locally before your visit, as rules for protected areas may change.

Routes and directions

There are trails of different lengths and with different destinations for longer trips. The Mühlenweg, also known as the Mühlradweg, runs for nine kilometres to Werburg Spenge or Spenge Town Hall. The Segelschiffweg, also known as the Schiffchenweg, is about 13 kilometres long and heads towards Hücker Moor. The Spangenweg, about 16 kilometres long, is a circular route around Spenge. These details can help you distinguish a route with a named destination from a longer loop around the town.

Information boards can be found at two different locations: in the car park opposite Mühlenburg Castle, there are maps and information boards about local hiking routes; at the Werburg ensemble, there is a separate board for shorter walks. Check the latest information on site if you want to plan your route accordingly.

Windmill, nature study centre and outdoor pool

The Hücker-Aschen windmill was built in 1861 and is a restored example of historic milling technology. The Hücker-Aschen local history association offers visits. Arrange dates and visiting options in advance, as these may change.

The Hühnerhaus, a former forester’s cottage, is located in Katzenholz and is maintained as a nature study centre. The sunken lane is considered a historic feature of land use and a refuge for animals and plants. These places complement the buildings and trails with insights into nature and the area’s former uses.

Werburger outdoor pool has a diving tower, a non-swimmer area, step-free access and a children’s pool. Facilities and operating conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit.
