Andreasberg combines visible traces of mining with a history of settlement and the local BestWeg. If you choose the village as a travel destination, you’ll find specific points of interest here to help you plan: the history of the miners’ settlement, named mining relics, and a hiking route that starts and ends in the village center.

Mining History in the Village Landscape

Andreasberg was founded in 1854 as a miners’ settlement. Nineteen of the original houses have been preserved, retaining the settlement’s historic architectural character. The mining history is also reflected in several named sites, including the Carl-Haber-Stollen, the Miners’ Cross, the Steigerhaus, the Dörnberg spoil heaps, and the historic miners’ houses along Dorfstraße.

These landmarks represent different aspects of mining history: adits and spoil heaps are part of the village landscape, alongside the Miners’ Cross, the Steigerhaus, and the preserved residential houses. This means Andreasberg can be understood not only through a single building, but also through the connection between mining and settlement. The 19 original houses provide a visible architectural link to the history of the miners’ settlement founded in 1854.

The BestWeg and Getting Your Bearings

The local BestWeg begins and ends at the hiking information board in the center of Andreasberg. St. Barbara’s Church in Andreasberg is a named landmark along the route. The trail therefore connects a clearly identified starting and ending point with another named feature of the village.

Two parking spaces are available at the hiking information board; additional parking is available near the SchĂĽtzenhalle. Check the practical details before you travel. For bus travel, Andreasberg has a stop called Andreasberg, Kirche. Route R72 connects Bestwig, Ramsbeck, Andreasberg, and Wasserfall. As timetables may change, check your connection before setting off.

For planning purposes, it helps to treat the starting point, parking options, and bus connection as separate points of reference. The hiking information board marks the beginning and end of the BestWeg; the bus stop is called Andreasberg, Kirche. This lets you plan your journey by car or bus using the relevant information without confusing these locations.

More Hiking and Nature Destinations in Bestwig

The Bestwig travel destination also offers a range of hiking options. The Bestwiger BestWege are circular trails around Andreasberg, Heringhausen, Nuttlar, Ostwig, Ramsbeck, and Velmede-Bestwig. The walks take two to four hours, making them suitable for half-day trips. This estimated duration offers a different point of reference from the information about the starting and ending point of the local BestWeg in Andreasberg.

The Bestwiger Panoramaweg is a route of around 60 kilometers across the ridges of the municipality of Bestwig. You can join the trail from any district in the municipality. The German Hiking Association has awarded it the “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” designation four times in a row. When choosing a hike, you can therefore distinguish between the BestWege described as suitable for half-day trips and a considerably longer route that covers the municipality.

The Plästerlegge near Bestwig-Wasserfall is another nature destination in the Bestwig travel area and the only natural waterfall in North Rhine-Westphalia. The water plunges almost vertically about 20 meters over a rocky ledge, then continues as a torrent for around 500 meters. From the parking area in the village center on Aurorastraße, the waterfall is about a 20-minute walk. Trail conditions may vary; take the estimated walking time into account when planning your visit.

The Sauerländer Besucherbergwerk in Ramsbeck is also located in the Bestwig travel area. There, an electric mine train travels around 1.5 kilometers through the dark Eickhoffstollen. For travel to the site, the visitor mine lists a regular bus service on route R72 from Bestwig station to Ramsbeck; the Ramsbeck-Ziegelwiese stop is directly in front of the visitor mine. Check the timetable before setting off. In addition to the mining relics in Andreasberg, the Bestwig travel area therefore offers a separately named visitor mine and a mine train ride as further mining-related attractions.
