Herdringen can be explored through several specific themes: open-air theatre with a long performance tradition, local architectural and church history, and routes for walking and cycling. When planning your trip, you can weigh these options and then look for a hotel. The main factors to consider when planning are the theatre season, access to the castle by prior arrangement only, and the different types of routes.

Open-Air Theatre and Herdringen Castle

The Herdringen Open-Air Theatre has staged performances at its current location every year since 1954. The first season opened with Friedrich Schiller’s play “William Tell.” The programme includes fairy tales for children and comedies for adults. The annual season runs from the end of May to the first few days of September; specific productions and dates vary. So if you are planning a visit to the theatre, check the current programme and performance dates.

Herdringen Castle is a historic manor house. The present-day castle was built between 1844 and 1853 to plans by architect Ernst Friedrich Zwirner. The castle chapel recalls his work on Cologne Cathedral. The castle is currently open by prior arrangement only. The historic grounds also include the English-style landscaped park, which was laid out on a generous scale in the 1840s.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The X1 hiking trail, also known as the Plackweg, passes through Herdringen and runs through Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. The Herdringen Panorama Trail, meanwhile, loops around the village. Marked feeder paths bearing the letter “h” lead from the village centre to this trail. As signage and trail maintenance should be checked locally, it is advisable to consult local information before setting off.

A shorter walk focused on local history is the Heinrich Knoche educational trail: it is about 500 metres long and has seven information stations about Heinrich Knoche’s life. For a cycling trip, the 3-Klöster cycle route runs via the castle park in Herdringen to Oelinghausen Monastery. The routes differ in course and format: the X1 passes through Herdringen, the Panorama Trail loops around the village, the Heinrich Knoche educational trail is a short walk with stations, and the 3-Klöster cycle route leads to Oelinghausen Monastery. Check the current route in advance if you plan to cycle.

Traces of Local History

Heinrich Knoche (1831–1911) is regarded as a pioneer of modern arithmetic teaching. He taught at the elementary school in Herdringen from 1852 to 1892. The educational trail focuses on his life; the Old School also commemorates the teacher and arithmetic master. Local architectural history stretches back much further, however: Sammelmanns Hof is considered the oldest farmstead in Herdringen, with a history that can be traced back to 1202. The listed Kneers Speicher dates from around 1700 and stands at the crossroads of Ostentor and Habbeler Weg. Most of the half-timbered houses near the church are listed buildings.

Another small religious monument is the Antonius Häuschen at the corner of Krähenbrink and Telgenweg. The Storm brothers built it in 1713 in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. St. Antonius and St. Vitus Church also reflects a range of historic and contemporary uses: during its redesign in 2006, the altar was placed on an elliptical, curved altar island in the centre of the congregation. The old part of the church is used for baptisms, meditation and exhibitions.

Traditions and Landscape

Local traditions in Herdringen include the Schützenfeste, or marksmen’s festivals, which are celebrated as large village festivals and have a very long history. Specific festival dates and programmes may vary. Another historic feature is the English-style landscaped park at Herdringen Castle, which was laid out on a generous scale in the 1840s. Together with the long theatre tradition, local buildings and varied routes, these features give a clear overview of the themes that may shape your stay.
