When looking for a hotel in Bruchhausen, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. The Bruchhauser Steine combine nature and archaeology; Bruchhausen Castle and the Marienkapelle offer different cultural highlights. The Ginsterkopf Tour and the Olsberg Chapel Circular Trail add specific hiking destinations. In winter, the Sternrodt ski area offers a seasonal activity.

Natural surroundings and views

The Bruchhauser Steine were designated a National Natural Monument in 2017 and are located within the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park. They are home to rare Ice Age relic species and are a traditional nesting site for peregrine falcons. This brings together a designated protected status and ecological features: the rocks are both a habitat and a site of importance for nature conservation.

The archaeological trail also leads to a specific viewpoint. From the 45 m-high Feldstein, you can see the Teutoburg Forest when visibility is good. This condition is part of the view, so when planning your visit, bear in mind that this distant panorama depends on good visibility.

Hillfort, castle and chapel

The Bruchhauser Steine are an integral part of a prehistoric hillfort. The wider travel destination of Olsberg also describes the hillfort between the rocks as a prehistoric place of worship, dating it approximately to around 500 BC. This adds an approximate date to the historical perspective alongside the description “prehistoric.”

Bruchhausen Castle is a historic moated castle at the foot of the Bruchhauser Steine. The grounds can be visited, but the interior is not open to visitors because the owners live in the castle. Plan your visit accordingly and focus on the grounds. The Marienkapelle is at the foot of the Istenberg and is a destination on the Olsberg Chapel Circular Trail. The hillfort, moated castle and chapel thus represent different historical and cultural themes.

Trails with different points of interest

The Ginsterkopf Tour follows the Rothaarsteig below the Bruchhauser Steine and continues to Bruchhausen. By contrast, the Marienkapelle in Bruchhausen is the destination of the Olsberg Chapel Circular Trail. The two trail descriptions highlight different aspects: the Ginsterkopf Tour has a named route and onward section, while the Chapel Circular Trail has a specific destination. This makes it easy to distinguish the trails by their respective points of interest.

Seasonal activities at Sternrodt

The Sternrodt ski area has a separate, beginner-friendly children’s and practice lift. As it is a seasonal facility, check the current operating times before visiting. The “Sternrodler” mountain toboggan run offers a different experience: first, it carries passengers 300 m uphill; the descent then passes through seven bends and reaches speeds of up to 45 km/h. The uphill ride followed by the winding descent, together with the stated maximum speed, gives you a clear idea of what this attraction offers.
