Hesborn offers several distinct themes to consider when choosing a destination: ecclesiastical architectural history, mountain scenery and geological traces. This lets you decide whether you are more interested in historic buildings, views or the formation of the landscape. The features described range from a Romanesque church tower to Bollerberg and a quarry with distinctive rock layers.

Church history across several periods

The Romanesque church tower in Hesborn has stood since 1126/27. The present Neo-Baroque church was built much later, in 1914/15. Both dates are part of the town’s church history, but mark different periods of construction. The church’s furnishings also connect Hesborn to places beyond the town: most of them come from the church of the former Kreuzherren monastery in Glindfeld near Medebach. The monastery was dissolved in 1804 as a result of secularisation. The church thus brings together a more recent phase of construction and furnishings whose origins lie in the history of the former monastery.

Mountain views and a path to the summit

At 758 metres, Bollerberg is a mountain in the Rothaar Mountains, in the district of Hesborn. From the Bollerberg Tower, views stretch across the Rothaar Mountains and the Hessian Uplands; in clear weather, they can reach as far as the Taunus. The reference to clear weather is important when considering the panorama: these distant views depend on visibility. Hilmesberg offers a different kind of landscape. A natural trail leads to its summit along narrow switchbacks. Hilmesberg is also part of the Liesetal-Hilmesberg FFH area. This puts a described viewpoint and a narrow, winding path side by side as different points of interest for planning a trip.

Rock and traces of ancient volcanic ash

The Hesborn quarry exposes siliceous limestone from the geological formation known as “Kulm Kieselkalk,” dating to the Lower Carboniferous period. Its age is given as approximately 320 million years. Fine traces of ancient volcanic ash can also be found between the hard rock layers. The quarry is one of 14 stops on the Geo-Erlebnis-Route (Geo-Adventure Route) around Hallenberg and Medebach. Visitors interested in the region’s geology will find a specific connection here to the rock type, its age and visible traces between the layers.

A castle site on Stolzenberg

Stolzenberg lies north of Hesborn. Remains of a castle’s ramparts can still be found on its summit; the castle was reported destroyed in an official document in 1694. The surviving remains and the historical record distinguish two aspects of the castle’s history: the report of its destruction and the traces still present on the summit. The castle site thus adds another historical point of interest near Hesborn to the town’s church architecture.

Culture in the wider destination of Hallenberg

Hallenberg can also be considered as a wider destination. Its historic town centre preserves the ring-shaped street layout around the site of the castle and includes half-timbered houses, the parish church and the market square. At the KUMP Information and Communication Centre in Hallenberg, visitors can experience the Hallenberg Easter Night through multimedia. Hallenberg’s Eishäuschen (Ice House) is home to a permanent exhibition of ice sculptures by local ice artist Joachim Knorra. These themes offer a different focus from Hesborn’s mountain and geological attractions: they turn attention to Hallenberg’s town centre and cultural offerings.

The Hallenberg Open-Air Theatre also has a long performance history: more than 100 productions have been staged there since 1946, along with several guest performances. The theatre made a promise to stage a Passion Play every ten years about the life and death of Jesus Christ and the message of his resurrection. A bakery is also still in operation in the former “Burg” quarter of Hallenberg. These details distinguish between past performances, the promise that was made and the bakery’s current operating status. When planning your trip, you can compare Hesborn’s architectural, mountain and geological themes with Hallenberg’s town centre and cultural attractions.
