Küstelberg – Trails, Winter Ski Trails and Local History

Hiking Trails and Historical Traces

The Rothaarsteig runs directly through Küstelberg. The Küstelberg Nordic Walking Park has three routes of varying difficulty. Hikers and cyclists can also use the 37-kilometre Kleinbahn Cycling and Hiking Trail. The route types differ in what they offer: the Nordic Walking Park focuses on difficulty levels, while the Kleinbahn Cycling and Hiking Trail is defined by its length and suitability for walking or cycling. The Schlossberg hiking car park is a starting point for the A trails around Schlossberg. As parking and access conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.

The Heidenstraße runs through Küstelberg and was historically a trade, military and pilgrimage route. Along its historical traces, hikers can discover boundary and mile markers, hollow ways and wayside shrines. There is also a stamp station for the Heidenstraße pilgrimage route in St. Laurentius Church in Küstelberg. So, while hiking, you can find both tangible traces of the historical route and a specific connection to the pilgrimage route.

Monastery History, Ewers Hof and the Marksmen’s Festival

The first known document relating to Küstelberg dates from 1177 and concerns a monastery dedicated to Saint Mary. The former monastery stood on the site of today’s church. Ewers Hof adds another theme to the village’s history: it began in 1666 as a storehouse where travelling merchants could store their goods. Over generations, the former storehouse was developed into an inn and a service business. The local history thus spans from the early monastery document to the transformation of a storehouse over generations.

Ski Trails and Other Activities

The Reetsberg ski trails offer three loops: one mainly for beginners and two for advanced skiers. You can start at the car park by the Schlossberg-Hütte or in the centre of Küstelberg. The Nordic Walking Park also has three routes, which differ by difficulty level; the ski trail loops are designated for beginners and advanced skiers. The two offerings therefore differ in how you choose between them, even though each has three routes.

The Schlossberg-Alm offers, among other things, an outdoor escape game; opening times may vary. A newly redesigned Kneipp footbath is located in the Orketal valley near Küstelberg. It can be reached on foot via the small Orke Trail or by bicycle. This adds another specific destination to the hiking trails and historical sites to help you plan your trip.
