Meschede: Discover Lake Hennesee, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Meschede
Meschede offers a variety of reasons to stay: outings at Lake Hennesee, trails through the countryside, historic town centers and winter activities. The following examples show how walks, longer routes and cultural attractions differ.
Lake Hennesee: walks, water sports and family time
In Meschede, the Henne Boulevard connects the lake and the town over a distance of two kilometers. The route passes Hennepark and the open Henne fountain at Winziger Platz. It is designed to be accessible and includes a fitness trail. At the water, Berghausen bathing cove offers opportunities for swimming, stand-up paddling at the water sports station, sailing and rowing.
For families, Pirate Cove is a free outdoor adventure playground at Lake Hennesee. It features a pirate ship, climbing and play equipment, and an accessible inclusive play area. The spacious grounds also include quiet and relaxation areas with benches, for unwinding, watching the surroundings or having a picnic. From the parking area at Berghausen bathing cove, an accessible path leads to Pirate Cove in about five minutes. Check local conditions before your visit.
You can also explore the area from the water: the fully electric event ship EMS Hennesee is accessible and can accommodate up to 550 guests. The scheduled cruise on Lake Hennesee lasts 1.5 hours. Check the current timetable before planning your trip, as service information may change. If you prefer to stay on shore, the Wogenweg is a walking path that brings nature and culture together: twelve steles display changing, themed poems.
Choose hiking trails by distance and character
The Meschede Höhenwanderweg is a circular trail marked with an “M” that runs through the municipal area. It goes from Erflinghausen via Grevenstein and Freienohl to Eversberg and offers views across the region. The Sauerland-Waldroute is on a different scale: this 240-kilometer long-distance hiking trail runs from Iserlohn to Marsberg and passes through Arnsberg Forest Nature Park in Meschede. There is a trail access gate at Buchsplitt in Eversberg.
For a loop by the water, the Hennesee circular hiking trail, marked “A8,” goes all the way around the reservoir and offers views of the lake. If you prefer a walk through a historic town center, you can take the approximately 2.5-kilometer Altstadtpfad in Eversberg. It passes the historic town hall and half-timbered houses; the castle ruins offer views across Eversberg. The route also includes an adventure playground shaped like a knight’s castle. Above Lake Hennesee, the family-friendly Sinnepfad combines ten interactive stations with views of the lake.
Nature and learning come together on the bee trail in Freienohl. Along the circular route, seven information boards tell visitors about bees and beekeeping; at the end is a display hive with a living bee colony. Bees and nature are also the focus of the Summender Schul- und Erlebnisgarten in Berge: numerous information boards explain the topics, and the garden is open to everyone.
Historic town centers and cultural attractions
In Eversberg, old cobblestones, half-timbered houses and a historic market square with an old town hall shape the town center. The 6.5-kilometer Kapellenweg links chapels, wayside crosses and roadside shrines around the old hill town. The starting point is the historic center of Meschede-Eversberg, where you can see traditional Sauerland half-timbered houses. You can explore the Eversberg local history museum on your own or on a guided tour.
Grevenstein also features historic architecture: old slate-roofed and half-timbered houses stand around the church and the Burgmannshof. The Bierbrau-Wunderweg focuses on the history of brewing. Information boards explain the subject; rest stops include a viewing counter with a forest refrigerator and a large barrel-shaped seat. In Remblinghausen, the cultural monument sawmill invites visitors on a journey through 200 years of life and work. Guided tours, a children’s program and a variety of activities are offered.
In Meschede, the Benedictine monks of Königsmünster Abbey offer public tours of the monastery grounds on Saturdays. The tours cover monastic life and the lives and work of the Benedictines. Check the current tour date before your visit. A tour of the Hennetalsperre reservoir offers another perspective on the region’s history: visitors can see the hydroelectric power station, the bottom outlet tunnels and the dam’s inspection tunnel system. Before the tour, a film shows the work of the Ruhrverband as well as the reservoir’s history and function.
Winter activities compared
The ski slopes in Eversberg and Grevenstein differ in size. Eversberg ski lift has a slope about 180 meters long with an elevation difference of around 25 meters, and a button lift; the slope is suitable for children. In Grevenstein, the ski slope is about 700 meters long, with an elevation difference of around 100 meters. A 50-meter-wide sledding slope is located right next to it. You can compare the two locations based on the slope sizes described and the additional sledding option.
