Sellinghausen: Winter Sports, Hiking Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Sellinghausen
When planning a trip to Sellinghausen, you can focus on specific offerings: winter sports, a historical circular hike, golf and insights into village life. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to first decide which of these themes will shape your stay. Local options range from seasonal winter activities to traditional customs and heritage sites.
Winter sports and winter hiking trails
At the Sellinghausen winter sports centre, the ski lift serves two runs: one is 600 metres long and the other 1,000 metres. There are also three circular cross-country ski trails and a toboggan lift. These winter facilities depend on snow and operating conditions, so check the latest conditions before your visit. There are also groomed winter hiking trails in the area around the ski lift. In places, the Somberg trail offers views across the northern Schmallenberg Sauerland. When planning, you can choose between downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and winter hiking, and pick the focus that best suits your travel plans.
The Miners’ Trail: a historical circular hike
The Sellinghausen Miners’ Trail is a 6.7-kilometre circular hiking route with an elevation gain of about 300 metres and a few steep sections. Its route largely follows the footpath that miners from Sellinghausen and Altenilpe used for almost 100 years to get to their workplace, the Felicitas slate mine in Heiminghausen. Seven information boards explain the miners’ working lives and the importance of their workplaces to the development of Sellinghausen and Altenilpe. The trail is marked with a hammer and pick. When deciding whether this hike fits into your day, its length, elevation gain and steep sections are important considerations.
Chapel, customs and Easter trail
St. Blaise’s Chapel was built in 1887 and solemnly consecrated on 5 July of the same year. It was added to the City of Schmallenberg’s list of historic monuments on 27 February 1998. Seasonal customs in Sellinghausen include a costumed procession of schoolgirls on Altweiberfastnacht and gathering flowers for the Corpus Christi carpets. On 22 February, schoolboys sing and strike wooden hammers to drive away winter and lure out the sun bird.
Another seasonal activity is the Sellinghausen Easter Trail: children and adults can complete tasks along the way, and children can collect a prize at the end. The customs and themed trail offer different ways to experience a visit, from traditional village events to solving riddles together.
Golf and a place to relax
Golf is another local option. Every hole at Sellinghausen Golf Club offers views. The golf school at Sellinghausen Golf Course offers private and group lessons, introductory golf courses, intensive courses for beginners and advanced players, and courses to obtain course qualification. If you include a golf course in your travel plans, you can choose between different types of lessons and course formats.
At GrĂĽnewalds Eiche village square, part of the trunk of the former oak tree serves as a table, topped with a glass panel displaying historical facts about the village. A water feature and benches invite hikers to stop and relax. Sellinghausen is served by the Schmallenberg municipal bus. Check the latest timetable before travelling.
