Landscape along the Agger and views from Haldy Tower

Weinberg Nature Reserve lies on a concave bank of the Agger—the outer side of a river bend. Its location is also easy to pinpoint: it is north of Ründeroth, in the municipality of Engelskirchen. Its riverside setting and position on the slope give the nature reserve its own distinctive landscape.

Haldy Tower stands above Ründeroth. More than 96 steps lead to its observation platform, from where you can look out over the Agger Valley and across to the Mucher Plateau. The tower was built in 1903 using funds raised through a collection among local residents. Its views and construction history go hand in hand: the climb leads to a sweeping view of the landscape, while the year it was built recalls the tower’s history.

Aggertal Cave and the Cave Trail

At Aggertal Cave in Ründeroth, the “First Look” guided tour offers an introduction to the cave’s geological history. Fossils of rugose and tabulate corals are also on display. The cave offers several different experiences: an introduction to its geological history with a guide, fossils to see, and an activity for children’s groups.

There are 10 information panels and 2 audio stations along the route. This sets the Cave Trail apart from a single viewpoint: it is a circular route linking different sections of trail with information stops. Check the latest information on the route length and availability before setting out.

History in Ründeroth

The Protestant Church is in the centre of Ründeroth and has a history spanning around 850 years. This approximate timeframe identifies the church as a historic building without reducing its history to a single event. Another fixture in the local events calendar is the traditional May fair, celebrated in Ründeroth. The church and the fair reflect different sides of the town: a long religious history and a traditional festival.

Culture in the municipality of Engelskirchen

The municipality of Engelskirchen also has its own cultural and historical attractions. The Oelchenshammer forge in Engelskirchen-Bickenbach is a fully preserved complex that is more than 200 years old. It is one of the last water-powered smithing hammers from the pre-industrial era in the Oberbergisches Land region. Blacksmithing demonstrations are held there, and children and adults can take part in blacksmithing workshops. The Oelchenshammer is generally open on Sundays from April to October, as well as on special occasions such as German Mill Day. Check the specific opening date before your visit.

Another historic site in Engelskirchen is the Ermen & Engels hydroelectric power station. From 1903, it supplied electricity to the factory and, for a short time, to parts of the town as well. Today, it is one of eight sites of the LVR Industrial Museum. The history of electricity supply complements the Oelchenshammer’s craft tradition, offering a different perspective on Engelskirchen’s industrial past.
