Discover Olpe: Nature, Caves and Culture
Accommodation in Olpe
When planning a trip to Olpe, it is worth exploring the natural and cultural attractions throughout the district as well. The entire Olpe district is part of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park, Germany’s second-largest nature park. Hiking trails, lakes, cycling routes and historic sites offer a range of options for planning your trip, depending on whether you want to spend time outdoors or explore regional history.
Nature and Trails in the Olpe District
The well-signposted hiking network in the Olpe district ranges from easy walking paths to challenging hiking routes. The Rothaarsteig is designated here as a quality or premium hiking trail. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails through the snow-covered forests of the Ebbe and Rothaar ridges add to the seasonal offering; their availability depends on snow conditions. The options therefore vary not only according to the activity you want, but also the time of year.
There are also cycling routes in and around the district, including the SauerlandRadring. Another route passes through Attendorn. There, the Ruhr-Sieg Cycle Route goes past the Fire Brigade Museum, the South Sauerland Museum, the Biketurm and the Gildehaus in the town centre. In Finnentrop-Fretter, the KnochenmĂĽhle is located directly on the SauerlandRadring. This small half-timbered building with a waterwheel was built around 1900, making it a specific historic site along the route.
Passenger boat trips are available on Biggesee and Listersee. The BiggeBlick observation platform offers a different view of the landscape. It is 90 metres high, and from there you can see across Biggesee and Gilberg Island, as far as the ruins of Waldenburg Castle. The viewpoints, boat trips and trails offer different ways to spend your time here. If you are planning a boat trip, check the timetable for your visit.
Caves, Exhibitions and Regional History
A guided tour of Atta Cave lasts about 40 minutes. The visitor entrance is through an 80-metre-long tunnel. For a different way to explore and learn, the “Tinkering + Puzzling” exhibition at Galileo Park features around 50 interactive exhibits that visitors can tackle alone or as a team. The park also hosts changing exhibitions in four pyramids.
In Attendorn, the Gildehaus focuses on the town’s guilds and trade associations. Housed in a lovingly restored, listed building dating from the late 19th century at Kleiner Markt, it displays items still in use today, as well as replicas of historic exhibits. The Attendorn Fire Brigade Museum focuses on a different aspect of history: its exhibition space of more than 700 square metres explores the history of firefighting, with exhibits including old hand-operated pumps, wooden ladders and vehicles. Educational materials enable children and young people to discover the history of the fire brigade independently.
Notable historic sites can also be found outside Attendorn. The KnochenmĂĽhle in Finnentrop-Fretter combines the form of a small half-timbered building with a waterwheel. The Wendener HĂĽtte is almost 300 years old, dating back well before industrialisation. Both sites offer a specific reason to look beyond exhibitions and explore historic buildings and their former functions.
Adventure Park and Summer Programme
Panorama Park Sauerland is a wildlife and adventure park covering 80 hectares. In summer, the Karl May shows are on the programme at Elspe Festival. As a show and festival park, Elspe focuses on attractions featuring people, animals and nature; rides, carousels and roller coasters are explicitly not part of its concept. Their different profiles can help you choose: one is a nature and adventure park, while the other centres on a summer show and festival programme.
A Sauerland-themed tour with a tasting of Original Sauerländer Bockwurst at the Metten factory outlet offers a culinary addition. As the tour’s availability and arrangements may vary, check the latest information about the themed tour in advance. Together with the hiking, cycling and cultural activities, it shows how varied a stay in the Olpe district can be—from outdoor pursuits to history, entertainment and regional specialities.
