Bad Wünnenberg: Nature, Culture and Activities
Accommodation in Bad Wünnenberg
Bad Wünnenberg combines nature experiences in the Aatal valley with trails, leisure activities and historic sites in its districts. When planning your stay, you can choose different focuses: outdoor activities, a bike ride through the countryside or insights into mining and regional history.
Nature and Activities in the Aatal Valley
Surrounded by forests and gentle hills, the Aatal nature area stretches from the spa gardens along the Aa river to the Aabach reservoir. The reservoir is also important for the drinking water supply: it provides drinking water to more than a quarter of a million people every day. In the spa gardens, an exercise trail with modern sports equipment at various difficulty levels adds to the range of activities.
A barefoot trail more than one kilometre long runs around the paddling pond. The adjacent wildlife enclosure is home to goats, red deer and fallow deer, which visitors can feed and pet. The Aatal valley also has a disc golf course, offering a sporting challenge for everyone. Opened in 2022, the bike park features mountain bike trails at three difficulty levels, including freeride and downhill trails.
For bike rides, choose from local circular routes between 9 and 25 kilometres long, inviting you to explore the countryside and Bad Wünnenberg’s seven districts. The Five Streams Trail offers a different focus: as a nature-themed trail, it invites you to enjoy an active stay in Bad Wünnenberg.
The large illustrated puzzle board on the path to the Aatal valley also features the town’s districts. It is located behind the outdoor swimming pool and invites locals and visitors to search and take a closer look. It depicts notable buildings, customs, personalities and anecdotes from all the districts.
Mining and Regional History
At the Bleiwäscher Bergbau audio museum, six stations tell the story of mining in Bleiwäsche. There is a child-friendly version featuring Mucki and Molli, as well as a source-based historical account for teenagers and adults. The audio museum is freely accessible around the clock. The museum also includes a four-kilometre educational trail, suitable for families.
In the district of Fürstenberg stands the Old Court House, a former court building of the Counts of Westphalia, built in 1736. It represents the civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Paderborn region, which was in force from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century. The building offers another way to explore the region’s historical development.
Another tradition is associated with the plague cemetery in Leiberger Forest. Victims of the plague were buried there in the soil of Fornholte after the people of Wünnenberg, fearing infection, locked their city gates and thus blocked access to the cemetery. Fornholte was a medieval settlement that was destroyed around 1390; the account is documented locally in the “Iron Book.” The plague cemetery is freely accessible.
Another attraction in Bad Wünnenberg-Bleiwäsche is the Düstertal quarry and Gateway to the Sauerland.
