Haltern am See: Beach, Excursions and History
Accommodation in Haltern am See
Haltern am See offers several different ways to spend your stay: the Haltern Reservoir and its lakeside lido, boat or covered-wagon excursions, and historical and religious sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Haltern am See, choosing a focus can help guide your plans: Would you like to spend time mainly at the beach, include a sightseeing cruise, or make room for culture and history? The activities differ in theme and format. It is worth checking schedules and event dates before your trip.
By the Lake and on the Water
The Haltern Reservoir was created artificially in 1930 by damming the Stever and Mühlenbach rivers. The lakeside lido has an 800-metre natural sand beach, beach chairs, children's playgrounds, and play and sports facilities, including beach volleyball and table tennis. The lake's origins and the lido's facilities highlight two different aspects: its artificial creation and the opportunities for beachgoing, play and sport.
The electric boat calls at the Innenstadt (alter Seestern), Seehof, Stadtmühlenbucht (north shore of the reservoir) and Hoher Niemen (east shore of the reservoir/youth hostel) piers. A round trip takes 1.5 hours; tickets are available online and directly on board. If you include the trip in your day's plans, check the current schedule and ticket information in advance. The 1.5-hour duration makes it easy to plan the round trip as a separate block of time.
Excursions from Haltern am See Station
The “Landpartie” covered-wagon tour departs from Haltern am See Station, passes the Haltern Reservoir and has the Westuper Heath landscape as its first destination. The bike station is right next to Haltern am See Station; you can rent bicycles and e-bikes there and have bicycles repaired. The station is therefore a shared point of reference for two different types of excursions: the covered-wagon tour, with its named first destination, and the bike station's rental and repair services. Check the current booking details for the Landpartie before making plans, as they may change.
History and Culture
Haltern is considered the best-researched military base from the time of Emperor Augustus. Annaberg is home to a pilgrimage site with a chapel and the St. Anna pilgrimage church. Together, these sites represent different cultural connections: the military history of the Augustan period and the religious character of the pilgrimage site. A walking tour of the old town lists November as the month of the Gänsemarkt event and 1999 as the year it began. Check the current event dates for your travel dates.
If you are also considering Recklinghausen as a destination in its own right, the Recklinghausen Substation offers a different cultural focus: it is Germany's largest electricity museum and features, among other things, a plasma globe, a tram you can walk through, and historical kitchen appliances to try out. Its theme differs from Haltern's Augustan period and the pilgrimage site on Annaberg.
