You can plan a stay in Hilchenbach around specific interests: Ginsburg and Wilhelmsburg offer different historical points of interest, while the local trails vary in length and purpose. If you are looking for a hotel in Hilchenbach, you can start planning your trip by deciding whether culture, mining history or outdoor activities should take centre stage.

Ginsburg Castle, local history and mining

Ginsburg Castle is a German-Dutch memorial site and a distinctive stop on the Rothaarsteig trail. The viewing platform atop the rebuilt keep offers sweeping panoramic views. This makes the site a place where a memorial, hiking route and viewpoint come together, while each retains its distinct character.

Wilhelmsburg was built in its present form as an administrative building in 1776. After extensive renovation, it became the home of the town archive, town library and town museum. The museum is located in Wilhelmsburg on the market square; admission is free. The historic market square itself stands out for its half-timbered houses and carillon.

Mining history is also present at several sites. The Stahlberg Museum in Müsen displays minerals from the Siegerland region and the surrounding area, as well as miners’ uniforms, mine lamps, tools and mining equipment. The collection also includes old prints, mine plans, maps and photographs from above and below ground.

The historic mining settlement of Altenberg in Hilchenbach-Müsen is among the selected attractions along the Eisenstraße Südwestfalen. On the excavation site of the medieval settlement, information boards explain a freely accessible circular trail. As visits outdoors are seasonal, plan yours for the appropriate time of year. The Altenberg and Stahlberg Association also offers guided tours of the “Stahlberger Erbstollen” show mine. Contact the association in advance to ask about dates.

Hiking, cycling and winter sports

The Ginsberger Heide recreation area lies between the Hohlsterzenbach and Giller nature reserves. A well-marked network of hiking trails crosses the municipal areas of Hilchenbach, ErndtebrĂĽck and Netphen. In the winter season, the Ginsberger Heide winter sports centre offers lifts, a downhill slope, groomed cross-country ski trails, a toboggan run, and a ski and snowboard school. Before travelling, check whether the seasonal facilities are currently operating.

A 5.27-kilometre paved circular trail runs along the Breitenbach Reservoir, located between Allenbach and Dahlbruch. It is suitable for walking, cycling and inline skating. Its specific length and paved surface make this loop easy to distinguish from the longer hiking routes.

The Hilchenbach Höhenring is about 24 kilometres long and suitable for a day hike. The Wäller Runde was completed in 2024 and covers 13 varied kilometres around Vormwald. Based on the stated distances, it is considerably shorter than the Höhenring; route conditions on the Wäller Runde may change, so check them before setting out.
